My 6.9 was refusing to start for no apparent reason. I traced the symptoms to not getting fuel -- engine would not start even with starter fluid. It seemed like I was getting fuel at the top of the injectors after loosening them, but the engine still would not start. A whole lot of cranking. I was going to really tear into things and bypass the fuel/water separator, though after looking carefully I think it already has been bypassed.
So I figured, what the heck, eliminate the simple things, so I got a container of Diesel Kleen and a new fuel filter. Filled the filter with Diesel Kleen (by the way, the small 16 oz container is not big enough to fill one of these filters), screwed it on, glowed for five seconds or so, and the engine fired right up. Ran kind of like crap for a few seconds but then smoothed out.
I think the issue was that the 100% biodiesel I've been running has been cleaning out deposits and finally plugged my filter. It was only a month or so old. But whatever, that's expected behavior.
Cheap fix. I think it cost me less than $20. Just wanted to toss that out there -- try this fix before you get any deeper into your engine, next time it doesn't want to start.
By the way, the filter at AutoZoo is the Luber-Finer FF815. About $11 here.
Yep you discovered the cleaning abillity of bio-diesel. Its always a good idae to carry an extra filter if you run b20 or greater. Happened with the 3208 in the old c8000, filled with b20 and idled into the next town because the filter plugged that fast
