I have an 88 Ranger 4x4 with a manual transmission, and I'm attempting to keep on top of the required maintenance on it. I'd like to know how often I should change the Power Steering Fluid, the transmission fluid, and brake-line fluids.
I have a Hayne's manual and it didn't have this info. I also checked your Fork link to down-load a user manual, but it doesn't have any on-line prior to 1997. Also, I did a search on this forum, and although there are plenty of posts on how to change these fluids, none of them told me how often they needed to be done.
Ford has schedules on-line, but unfortunately, they only go back to 1996. I don't imagine there is going to be too much difference, though. It's worth a look.
A good rule of thumb, it's a 88.............I would rehab all those systems with new fluids, I just got done doing this very thing on my 87 Bronco II that had been sitting in the blackberries for 4 years.
Thank you for all your help over the years. You guys have been wonderful! I no longer have my 88 Ranger 4x4. It had a chronic over-heating problem that I couldn't get rid of, despite all the money I kept throwing at it. It was getting too scary for me since I can't work without a vehicle. Second-hand trucks are extremely expensive on Vancouver Island right now and I ended up trading mine in for a van, since vans are a dime a dozen and I couldn't afford a truck.
However, I do have a friend who still has a Ranger 4x4 that is two years younger than mine. I'll be forwarding the link to this site to his mail box.
If anybody's interested in my truck to restore or for parts, I think the backyard dealer who traded with me still has it. It's had three rad flushes this year; and a new alternator, a new battery, a new starter, a new clutch, new thermostat, new heat sensor, and new front brakes over the past two years.
