I am attempting to rebuild my 460 before I drop in into her new home a 1974 3/4 ton. I had new valve seals put in at my local machine shop and he noticed that the one valve guide is pretty sloppy. He wants $300 to change the guides and I just dont have the cash. I was able to get a set of heads of what I think is mid 80's 460. The valve look to be the same size. The heads number is as follows F8TE-DA. What year? What is the combustion Chamber Volume? and is there any problem with putting them on my 1972 block? Thanks in advance -Ed PS the block number E7AE-9C and it has another number under that CJB485.
yes I am pretty sure that its an F on the head. I have the entire engine. It is carbed motor. Lets say that I'm blind or confused what would be the chamber volume on a E8TE-DA?
Even a 1988 model is an EFI motor.
With an '87 engineering number on the block it is definitely fuel injected. The change came with the '88 model year, but production started in 1987.
There are only E7TE and F3TE fuelie heads that I know of. (I didn't even think they made 460's after 1998)
An easy way to tell if it is fuel injected is to see if the valve covers have center bolts.
Piston reliefs will be different.
Like I said the ports, and therefore valve angles, changed.
For that matter, if you have the heads why not just use a burette and a piece of plexiglass to CC them yourself?
Sorry, I have never checked the volume of either version of FI head.
Never did any internal performance mods to an SD engine...
Ok thanks. Just to thinkin the plot I found the casting number on the other head that was on this engine. D3VE-A2A which is early 70's and I has my buddy look at the other head to see what he thought the number was. he thinkls it's E6TE-DA. Wouldn't you think they shoud be the same number? I found another post on her whare the guy was refering to these heads interchangeably. So could the motor be a 1986 or early production 87 because it deffinatly had a card on it? Thanks Sorry to be a pain. I found a chart on the web and it said that D3VE-A2A have 91.4 chamber.
I am almost positive that the truck that this engine came from was at least a F-350. I think I'm going to slap them on, drop the engine in the truck and give it a try. If they suck then its not like I will need to remove the engine to change the heads. Thanks -Ed
