I have a 2006 explorer with the 4.0 v6 4wd. we just got this thing back in january when we got it, it had 93000 miles on it. now at 101000 miles we are starting to have issues with the trans. the other day my wife took the kids to the dr, when she went to leave she put in reverse and it wouldnt move she went back to park and tried again and same thing. she then went back to park and tried again, same thing wouldnt move. then she went back to park turned the key off then started it back up and put in reverse again. still didnt move. she tried a couple more times and finally it engaged but, when it engaged it slamed into gear. it hasnt done it sence. it didnt turn on any lights, cel or the o/d off light didnt come on or anything. i have not tryed to check for codes yet anyway. the other thing i am starting to notice is a little hessitaion going down the road and when it shifts up it comes out of a gear and feels and sounds like it takes a second for the converter to lock up like the converter slowly locks.
anyone have any ideas on what i may have going on. other than this the explorer drives and rides like a dream.
i called ford and talked to a guy and of corse he said " i cant tell what is wrong we would have to check it out." after letting him know im not just somebody who drives and drives i also do my own work like the issues with the 5r55e shift flaires i took care of in my ranger, he told me well we have been seeing alot of shift packs going out in this trans.
i know this trans is a completely different animal compared to others. my wife didnt know what to think when i tryed telling her to check the trans fluid and she spent 30 minutes looking for the dip stick and couldnt find it. lol. she couldnt belive i did that to her. it was funny though.
if anyone has any info for me i would love to hear it.
thanks
when is this transmission suposed to be serviced? i belive the older transmissions like the 5r55e was every 30,000 miles. i know the new ones are high milage and dont call for it till later but im not sure on when.
16 pages so far, and I've posted my issues there too. There's at least 1 TSB, maybe more regarding this stuck tranny lever. Learn the trick to free it up. The short version is: pull out the rubber mat at the bottom of the console cupholders and use a flat tip screwdriver to pop it loose through the hole that is exposed.
