I have a '95 bronco that was originally an automatic, the PO swapped it out in favor of an np435 4spd manual. The 4spd is on it's last leg, and i've found another '95 bronco for parts locally, it has an automatic in it. I wanted to know how strong the automatic is in a '95 bronco, before i buy this truck to swap it into mine. My bronco has 37in tires, and when they wear out i'm putting 39s on it, i've got 4.88 gears. Will the auto trans survive? I am not fond of auto trans, as i've had alot of trouble with them. I've been hunting a truck about the same model with a 5spd, to swap transmission and wiring harness (i need that check engine light off already, and speedo to work), but this auto would do the job (even though i don't like auto).
I emailed the guy, asking him what the trans code was on it. I keep reading about e4od, i've read that it's pretty strong, and '95 and up are the best ones(good for me). If it ends up being a 4r70w, how strong are they? Will either be fine if i run a trans cooler from hell, with a bigger pan? Should i hold out for a 5spd? I was even thinking of swapping a diesel or 460 w/ 5spd into it. I'd have to put a divorced transfer case, because all the 4wd hd trucks people want an arm and a leg(and the other leg, and the other arm) for them.
Will they not survive my Bronco while stock? I don't mudbog, rockcrawl, or abuse the truck. I will be going through the occasional mud hole, but nothing serious, i have other 4x4s for that. I just put a picture of it in my gallery, and see, it's too pretty to beat up. I thought about taking the lift off of it, and putting about a 4" with 33s, so i can drive it more often, but someone spent alot of money putting this lift on it. If i did that though, i'm sure it would make an auto trans very happy.
It's an E4OD. Ford never used the 4R70W in the Bronco's. The E4OD is strong, but you can always make it stronger. I would put an external cooler on it and a temp gauge so you can keep an eye on it. Depending on the mileage and condition, I'd also consider a shift kit.
Does the trans temp determine it's overall reliability? What i mean is, as long as i keep the trans temp under X amount, i shouldn't have any trouble with it? Or are there other things that may break due to large tires, that would break while trans temp is low?
