I'm gonna apoligize first for this being so long... about a week ago i shut my truck off and about 30 sec later i heard a gurgling sound from the glove box. i thought to myself that the heater coil was going. anyhow last nite my truck overheated, luckily i was close to home. i looked under the truck and didn't see any leaks but i did find fluid on the cross member.( i guess the engine was hot enough to evaporate.) so this morning i get up and fill it w/ water and drive it around hoping to find a leak. to make a long story short i couldn't find a leak. i drove it around this afternoon and everything seems to be fine. so my questions are...
is my heater coil bad?
do i just have a slow leak that needs to be repaired? (thats what i figure... just got low enough last nite to overheat.)
I have a 95 e-150 that had a similar problem with the gurgeling noises after the truck had been driven for a while and then parked and shut off.I thought it had to do with the thermostat or water pump.I had the both parts replaced and it still did the same thing. My mechanic figured maybe it was a faulty water pump(because he tried to use a non oem water pump). There is a problem with this non oem part that mechanics are using for water pump replacements. My mechanic is experiencing this with the fleets he services now. After the change over i was still experiencing the same thing. To make a long story short it was the radiator that was clogged beyond repair. Now i have no more problems after the radiator replacement.I would suggest having the system pressure tested first to find out whats wrong in order to find which part to replace.
I had a similar problem on my 89 f150 4x4 302. It turned out to be a radiator leak. the leak was in the seam between the tank and core high up on the left side. Apparently it only leaked at high rpm and pressure. At idle in the driveway there was no sign, but I was still losing coolant. The pressure tester only revealed the leak when the radiator was filled to the rim
thanks for the help. i drove home my truck home from college yesterday (2.5 hrs) and didn't have any trouble. I checked my fluid level after it had cooled down and it was only about 1/2 liter low. I obviously have a leak somewhere. I'm gonna have it pressure tested and replace the thermostat while i'm at it.
