Pinion Angle

I know this question has been asked before, I just can't seem to find it. I swapped in a 9 inch out of a 63 f-100 was wondering what the correct pinion angle should be? Running a 302/c4.

Thanks,
Adam

The engine/trans should be pointed somewhere around 3 degrees downward. Measure the angle at the tailshaft. Take whatever angle measurement at the tailshaft and use this angle for the pinion...only have the pinion pointed up. The easiest way to think about it is that you want the tailshaft and the pinion to be parallel. Lots of charts floating around the net if you need a picture.

not that i want to guinea pig this but how bad can it be when there is a slight angle difference to parallel? the 4X4 boys must eat u-joints weekly!
i am working on my pinion angle too, its really hard to pinpoint what is going to be correct in my case cause there is no wieght from bed, cab, etc. i am gonna have some rake back to front, tire size, etc. but it tough to know exactly

generally you will be ok within a degree. which is less than u would get with all the changes due to weight..

Yep, 3 degrees up on the pinion. It is my understanding (and experience) that the engine / trans tilt is built in to the intake manifold by the manufactures, the carb base of the intake should be level and the tailshaft angle will be at 3 degrees.

The actual degree number doesn't really matter as long as the pinion shaft and the trans output shaft are on the same plane......in other words, parallel.

302 block & C4 combo.....sweet...thats is what I'm working with...

...for now...unless somebody happens to leave an AOD on my front
porch......

...until then I'm gonna keep pluggin' away to make it work with the
3.89 Trac-Loc in a FRANKENINE (nick-name for this PITA) rear-end
pulled out of a wrecked '70 F100 along with the original C4...and
topped-off with a vintage '63 Buddy Barr/Holley SBF tri power......

C-4 ratios are: 2.46:1, 1.46:1 and 1.00:1… reverse is 2.19:1

Sooooo...with a 3.89 ring & pinion...and 15" tire/wheel combo
around 28" diameter I figured I'll be spinning right around

3268 rpm at 70- mph......ouch...

DRIVELINE PHASING......

Look at the diagrams in post #19...clear things right up......

Thought this might help......

Three degrees is what I did and it works fine. Don't sweat it too much cause you can always get a wedge to put between the rear axle and the spring to fine tune it once the the body is on. Many suppliers sell these shims in degree incriments.
