I took my truck in for the TSB update and decided to have my oil changed, while it was there...I did not check the work when I picked it up..simple oil change right. Something told me to check when I got home and this is what I found, oil leaking from the new filter and a very large mess under the truck to include the mechanics oily hand print on the passenger side cab steps....sheesh not even sure they did the update now, anyway I can check myself ? They swear it was done, but I'm pretty skeptical now.
Could this not have been something other than a lazy/incompetent technician? Before you jump off a cliff here, take some time to figure out what's really going on. Is the filter loose? If so...tighten it and contact the dealer with the photos and ask for your next oil change on them. Have you had service there before?
People make mistakes, but sometimes things happen regardless of the best efforts.
I did take it back, had them check the filter and oil level, and clean the mess up under the truck. The mechanic told the service writer it was residue that he forgot to wipe off and the filter was not loose, yea whatever. This is my first diesel, but none of the filters in my gas vehicles in 20+ years of changing oil ever looked like that when I was done. I doubt there top notch guy did the oil change as it should be a simple task but really? No leak check when your done? How about cleaning up your mess on the customers vehicle? They refunded my $83.00 and offered to wash the truck..been raining here for about 3 days so that was unnecessary. Doubt I'll hear back from them or ever use them for service again.

So I'll ask again....have you used them before for service?
Have you ever finished a job, checked it and it looked good, but went back later to find that something had come undone? My point is simply that it's really easy to jump to the conclusion that they had someone without any ability do the work when there are other, more plausible reasons for something like this.
Sounds like they did more than they needed to in an effort to satisfy you and apologize for the issue. That goes a long way with me. I'd be pleased to use them for service.
Not to slam service techs at dealerships (I know of few of them are on this site ), but it seems the techs who do the oil changes at dealerships are not the ones who do the higher end services. Are they trainees?
I quit having dealerships do my "self maintenance" things like oil changes, filters, etc. because I saw first hand the quality of what some of them did.
It is really is a shame it works this way at some places. Quality service does get the customer to buy the next one...

.
I guess logically it wouldn't make sense to have your best trained techs doing oil changes. You'd want the lesser trained/paid/experienced people doing that as the task is very simple and requires little mechanical aptitude. So ya...the oil change guys should be trainees or dedicated oil change, tire rotation, etc techs, no? I certainly wouldn't expect to have the lead diesel tech changing my oil. That's poor management and a waste of an important resource. How would you like to be the guy with the serious diesel engine issue and be told you have to wait for the tech to change someone's oil?
Point is...this stuff happens...either by someone overlooking something or a parts failure or both. The OP didn't say if he tried to see if the filter was loose or not, but it sounds like maybe it wasn't tightened enough to seal completely. Maybe they replaced the filter? Either way, without knowing if this was a one time thing or not it seems pretty rash to jump to the idea that the dealer's service department is crap and not to be trusted.
Just my opinion, but stuff like this bothers me. Everyone these days seems ready to jump down everyone else's throat before considering the options. Would I be upset if it were my truck? You bet, but I'd take the opportunity to see how the dealer handles the issue and use *that* to formulate my opinion.

I have only used them 1 other time for my 2008 F250 with a Blendor Valve (spelling?) replacement under warranty..3 valves and 8 days later truck returned fixed. Something about the way they must be set out of the box or possibly bad part, stayed patient and accepted their explanation..starting to doubt their competence now though. I'm a mechanic (helicopter) myself so I understand no one is perfect, however total experiance here "check work, clean up after yourself, pride in work" IMO sucked.

The filter was loose..I checked it before I drove back to the dealer. This was an oil and filter change, that is a "new filter" I didnt' jump down anyones throat, just not sure the rest of the work scheduled (TSB installed) was completed when the mechanic lied about the situation.

All you have to do is look at the pic where the filter makes contact with the engine. The oil pattern on the filter shows that the oil came out under pressure indicating that it was loose. The tech obv didn't take the time to check his work for leaks.

Sorry..I didn't mean you. The "mob mentality" often kicks in on these forums and the result isn't pretty.
Thanks for clarifying about the filter being loose. It certainly looked like that was the issue, but it's good that you confirmed it.
I have been told the way to check for the 'flash' update is to push the '+' or '-' button that is used for manual shifting to display the 1-6 shift indicator on the right hand side of the LCD screen. When you shut off your truck and then go and restart it the 1-6 shift indicator should still be there without having to use the '+' or '-' button to display it again.
