What do you guys think about a 302 in a truck engine? what kind of fuel milage do you get and how much power?
I get 14-17 MPG, depending on how heavy my foot is, and I get awesome power. with enough gear, you could have a very powerful truck that you can live with everyday. I also have 100% aftermarket parts on mine, I quite literally built mine out of catalogue parts. Did it all for less than $3,000. 2.75 rear end with a C4, and it runs very strong. Kinda slower off the line than I'd like it to be, but it screams on the highway. I do 75 MPH at only 2500 RPM. Edelbrock Carbureted, and I drive it everyday. TK
i like my 302.....i can cruise on the highway at 75 at 2100 rpms....it goes when ya step on it.....but the one downside is fule milage...i get 10....probably something to do with my foot...but its all in the game....
I think you also need to determine what you want the truck to do. As these guys pointed out, the 302 is a great engine for a cruising truck. Where I think it falls down is in towing/hauling. The reason the 302 is so good cruising is it revs quick and likes living in the higher rpm range. The downside to that is less torque at lower rpm's. And if you tow/haul often you'll miss that torque.
*Edit to add*
Of course you can get the low end power back by going to a 3.73-4.10 gear in back, but to me that defeats the purpose.
I built my own motor and it has great power. I am however going to regear it. I get 13-15 when I'm not on it hard and it makes plenty of power. I cruise around 2300.
