The only difference is the color and taxes. Red is off road diesel so therefore no road tax. If the cops bust ya with red in the tank its like a 10k fine.

I think the fine is 10k per gallon.I wouldn't fill 'er up.I don't think the savings would pay off if you got caught, but the truck will run just fine on it.

If they can't dip your tank they'll check your filter.

Not sure about most areas, but I have never seen a DOT officer with a personal truck pulled over. But if you wanted to run red you could always throw in a curve ball. I have heard of some truckers running it and also keeping Marvel Mystery Oil on hand and using the rational that is why the fuel is red because they use it as an additive. Im not condoning it, just passing along some things I have heard.

MMO won't turn it that bright red. Anyone with half a brain wouldn't believe that story.

10K fine seems a little steep. You'd have to use quite a bit of fuel to have evaded that much in taxes

Nothing needs to be done to the truck but from the answers so far I gather you've figured out it is illegal. The red dye fuel is for off road use only and price does not include road use tax. If you were to be running off road fuel and get checked you're in a heap of trouble. My understanding is they don't even have to dip the tank today, just sniff the exhaust. I know the technology is available. Could be all departments don't use it yet.

In Montana, it's $1,000 the first time you're caught, $5,000 next time and jail on number three. And, they have a 24 hour tip line!

Up here in North Bay Ont, if you have a status card (native) you can run it no problems, I buy it all the time. Its Ultramar fuel & it has the same cetane value.
Yes I am native.

In Illinois it's $2,500 first offence and $10 per gallon or $1,000 minimum. Subsequent offences get steeper. You break 2 laws when cought using untaxed fuel, state, and federal.
