o2 sensor

Hi,

The truck is a 1989 F250 460 fuel injected. We just replaced the o2 sensor. Other than the obvious, it's a bad sensor, any ideas on what might make the check engine light come on? The light will come after running the truck for a while and go off when I turn the engine off. After restarting, it stays off for a while then comes back on. The engine seems to be running ok.

Is there an easy way to get the codes or do I need a code reader?

Thanks for any advice,
Greg

You don't need a code reader:

Hi all,

I got the codes from the computer. Here they are:

32
EGR Vavle Position sensor or Pressure Feedback EGR sensor - signal voltage is below colsed limit or has gone beyond set limits OR Problems with EGR valve controlling

41
Exhaust Gas Oxygen sensor: voltage signal always "lean" (low value) - does not switch

Having just replaced the o2 sensor, would problems with the EGR valve cause the lean condition in the O2 sensor? If so, should I change the EGR valve or is there something controlling it that I need to look at?

Thanks again for all the advice so far.
Greg

Hi,

I checked the EGR Control valve. I have strong vacuum going in, but little or no vavuum going out. I pulled it off the truck. When I suck on the input put, I can hear air going through. When I put my finger on the end of the output, I feel no pull but hear a noise in the diaphram. Is this normal or should I feel a pull when I plug the output?

Thanks,
Greg

glfrank,

I'm not sure if I'm following you exactly on your test of the EGR valve. With the valve off the truck if you blow or suck on the input (bottom) of the valve no air whatsoever should pass thru-same thing on the output. You shouldn't hear anything. If you suck on the vacuum nipple you should be able to feel the pintle move up and down (on the input end) as you suck and release but you still shouldn't hear any air move. If you do then there is a crack/hole in the diaghram and this would be defective. If air is passing thru the valve with no vacuum on the diaghram then the pintle is probably rusted/pitted enough and is also defective. You might try cleaning around the pintle as carbon/rust could be keeping it from properly seating. Then try your blow/suck test again. A hole in the diaghram would be considered a vacuum leak and then the EGR wouldn't operate properly. I hope I understood you correctly.

Randy
