Sorry, I posted this in the wrong place earlier. I have an '04 F-250 diesel that's been surging upon acceleration. Gets a little better when warm. The deal;er repalced an exhaust sensor that did little to solve it and now says the turbo is "sticking". Could cost around a grand to remove and clean up or way more to replace if it's defective. I'm not sure I can trust these guys at this point and have heard that a common cause is another sensor, which I forget the name of ( ICP?). Any help? Than ks
ICP is the correct term,it is either under the back side of the turbo or two thirds the way back on the passengers valve cover it depends on the build date of the truck.
ftuber - Did you ever determine what was causing your surging. I'm having the same issue with my '06 F350 Turbo Diesel, and it has the Ford techs scratching their heads.
Yes, I did. At first, my local dealer said it was an exhaust sensor problem. Had it changed and it seemed to improvem, but only temporarily. Unfortunately, my son drives it most of the time and never told me the problem never fully resolved. So, when I drove it and noticed it was still there, I brought it back to Ford, who said too much time had elapsed, but that they were sure it was a turbo issue. Wanted $800 to dismantle, clean it up and reinstall. AND, if it required a rebuild or replace, the part alone would be $1400. I brought it to a local mechanic who I trade with occasionally and he took it apart, cleaned out the gunk and reassembled and reinstalled thru our trade. Runs great now! Sorry, long story. point is, it was the turbo all along. Hope this helps.
Yeah, they Dealership has replaced the exhaust sensors as well. The funny thing is that it didn't do this till they replaced the turbo 2 months ago. My guess is that they put in a bad turbo, and since they are on the hook for it, they want to look at that as a last resort. Going on week 3 driving their loaner truck...
Unless you're a diesel expert, you're kinda at their mercy. If it's not the turbo or exhaust sensor, I've heard it could be another sensor called somethiong like the ICP, or something like that. I guess I got lucky with just needing the turbo cleaned out. Runs fantastic now. No more surge and better power. Good luck.
