STOP Whinning about MPG!!!!
If one person drove 10 V10 powered trucks, his mileage would be within a couple tenths on average between the lot.
I drove a rental V10 Excursion while my V10 Excursion was in the shop. It averaged 2mpg LESS than mine. It was driven by the same person, on the same daily routes. This was calculated manually.
Out.
I had to bring this one back up to the top. I'm tickled by some of the claims that are made regarding mileage, and some of the posts asking what it should be. It is what it is, and no one gets more than anybody else, assuming the same style of driving and proper vehicle tune.
I'm a fairly conservative driver, and keep my foot out of it most of the time. I know what I get for mileage, and it isn't what some of the claims are posted in these forums. If one person drove 10 V10 powered trucks, his mileage would be within a couple tenths on average between the lot.
The 2 V10's there are ones *I* have owned... and the mileage records are not supporting your adea
Joe Marine, Your 13-14 numbers are right in the ball park of most other claims, and if you stuck it at 55 on the flats, with a tailwind, possibly a draft from a semi, all four tires close to max inflation, etc., maybe. No offense to you.
DRM, very complete, and no doubt accurate mileage records. Not apples to apples, more like oranges to tangerines. The crew cab 4x4 with 4:30 rear gears I would expect lower results. Weight, gearing and other differences are substantial. Your numbers are in the range. No offense to you.
My numbers are 9.5- 10 for the in town driving I do which is a lot of short stop and gos. My 'go's' are a lot milder than most who drive alongside me, which finds me right behind them at the next stoplight. My stops are 'anticipated', which is probably why I'm still on the first sets of rotors and pads on all four at 45k miles with no wobble/warping. 13-14 on the road at 74 mph extended. Towing is highly dependant on hills, wind, speed, and other factors. Thats why it varies between <7 and >8.5 at <60- >75 mph.
My point is, there are claims in these forums, on other forums, and in talking to other owners, that are a little 'out there'. I've reset my computer while on the roll, and have seen 30- 40 mpg for some distance, while rolling on a level grade or downhill, and maybe a tail wind or none at all. My Banks kit probably didn't make the 1/2 mpg difference it claimed while towing. Theres no way a chip will give you "up to 2 mpg" either, but if you think so, thats fine. The power of suggestion is great. No offense to you.

All I can say is I guess I live a charmed life. I haven't added anything fancy like a chip or a turbo or whatever as I don't intend to have my rpm's in the 3500 range where the neat stuff seems to really kick in.
All ya'll have a nice life and enjoy whatever mileage you get. I still think the oval beats anything on four or six wheels by any measure.
I'm OUT.
[B]Monsta, ".......and proper vehicle tune." Who knows what state of tune your rental was in and if the rear gears compared and if a headwind kicked up for one trip and a tailwind kicked up for the other, and if the tires were properly inflated. No offense to you.
I actually wanted to expand on my post but was too tired to type.

I do know that the rental was in excellent running condition with only 10K miles, had the same rear end and tires pressure was virtually the same as what I normally run, although they were A/T and I use R4SII.
As far driving conditions...I had the thing for over 50 days. That's a reasonable amount of time to develop a reasonable average difference.
BTW, hard to offend me nowdays. See, since I live back in Hawaii again nothing really bothers me anymore.
Mine's a 4x4 and I usually get a little over 11 mpg with most tanks. The best I've seen to date was 14.4 and that was a strict interstate trip with no load or trailer cruising between 60 and 65mph. The worst I've gotten was this winter when I got under 9mpg on a few tanks due to slow winter driving and using the front axle engaged. I could care less. I expected to average about 10mpg when I bought so I'm happy to see 12 or 13 on a highway trip.
We take my wife's Trailblazer when we go on a family outing to the mall or wherever and I can easily get twice the mileage as the SD. The V10's low mileage doesn't kill my wallet because I only drive it about 1000 miles a month, which equals 3 or 4 fillups every 4 weeks.
If that JoeMarine can squeeze 20mpg out of his V10 more power to him. I'd like to see what he could eek out of a new 6.0L PSD! Probably over 30mpg!
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
where do you guys get such miles on your trucks. I have a 2000 F-250 V-10 and I usually get 8 mpg and on the hwy 11.5 if I am lucky. I have 35's on it which doesn't help, but I didn't think there would be that big of a difference.
Like I said-I usually average between 11 and 12 with mixed highway/town driving. How some guys manage 15 or 20 mpg I dunno. I could see having a 2wd making some diffference but not 8 or 10 mpg worth. There was a guy at pickuptruck.com with a reg cab 2wd 3.73 V10 that seemed pretty honest and he claimed he could manage 17mpg unloaded on highway trips if he kept the rpms under 2000 and did about 60mph. I can believe that. I think the extra weight and drag from the 4wd parts costs 2 to 3 mpg easily.
How much difference in mpg is there between a 4x4 and 4x2?
