I have seen some products out there to remove scratches from glass, but it has to remove a certain amount of glass and can effect the optical clarity, for example, ripples. Glass in a 49 is flat laminated, a good glass shop should be able to replace it at a reasonable price.
Here's one example from Eastwood http://www.eastwood.com/glass-polish...ches-5658.html

The rule of thumb...pardon the pun... is that if you can feel the scratch with your fingernail, they're too deep to polish out. I've tried just about every product out there over the years for wiper scratches and such, and have yet to find one that's satisfactory. Like what was said previously, you will cause ripples and optical problems. Best bet is to replace the glass.

I can say it helps but not perfect. Try clear nail polish.
Of coarse its not permanent but its worth a try. Personally I would go with new glass eventually (like stated, its just flat) but this could get you through for a while.
