I wanted to try my $14.95 Harbor Freight HVLP gun out and all I had was some Rustoleum. I thinned it out with some mineral spirits and tried it out on my metal tool cabinet. I can't believe the results. Smooth a glass not counting for the scratches already on the cabinet.
Other than being slow drying and prone to dust for that reason, I can't see anything bad about it. Some claim it won't hold up but I painted some gas pipes with Rustoleum over 30 yrs. ago and they're still holding up fine except for being a little chalky looking, but that's no sin considering they were never polished and have been through years of snow, heat and rain.
I can't help but wonder what using some Valspar hardener (made for paint like Rustoleum) and thinning with naptha would do for faster drying time.
