It also matters how people are calculating their mpg. I hand calculate so more accurate. Some readings might be from on-board mpg reading which usually reports better than real world.

I'm hand calculate too. The computer is consistently higher than real-world mpg.
2005 V6 AWD adverage 19-21. 17 city 23 freeway. Normaly loaded down with a couple hundred pounds of tools. Have had it up to 30 on the freeway. Cruise set at 70 calm day. 300 mile trip and only 10 gallons of gas. Tires at 38psi cold. Towing 3000lbs I get 12 city and about 18 freeway.
03/XLT/V-6/Auto 2WD The wife commutes 60 mi. round trip per day, 8 mi total in town, the rest stop & go interstate. Average top speed, 70mph. A good week= 320+ per tank/fill up @ 13.5 gal... or about 23mpg & some change.
When we travel cross-country on vacation & put the boot to it, 75-85mph, 2 people with a load of junk, it drops to about 290 mi a tank.
2009 4cyl, manual transmission: Typically get about 23-25 on mixed driving, roughly 70% highway and 30% town with just me in it, driving moderately aggressive (70-75 on the highway and fairly quick starts in town). Interstate cruising 75-80 the best I've gotten was 28 but that was w/ 4 people. With less weight and slowing down I'm sure I could have gotten 30+. Those are all hand calculated. I don't drive like a grandma, but w/ the manual I also never let the engine wrap very far before I shift. I've never driven an auto but I would guess I'm in overdrive well before they are.
I keep telling myself I'm going to drive it like a grandma for a week just to see how good I can do...just can't bring myself to do it though! I'm guessing I could get in the upper 20's if I slowed down 10mph on the highway and took off slower from stops in town.
Seems to not matter older or new....they gt roughly the same when you average all types of driving...the good thing here...all honest...not a sticker on a window
I tracked a trip from GA to CA and back. Mileage varied by terrain and speed.
If I kept it at 65 or lower, it would get from 25.3 to 26.3. When my wife drove, and drove the limit, 75, the mileage was 21, 22.9, and 22.48. Around town it was 18-20. 3.0v6 2007 2WD ~95k miles
On the return, high was 27.6 and low was 24.0. Six tanks averages were: 24.0 24.5 26.3 27.2 27.6 25.2. The last part of the trip, combined with about half being local driving averaged 23.7
I got an 08 xls 2.3 manual tranny with 84k and get 28.5 with about 90% highway 110 miles a day driving 75mph. Before I switched to michilans the continentals got 29.5 so i lost 1mpg but the new tires are so much quieter that its worth the loss. I do lose 2 mpg in the winter even on long trips so its not just added idle time. I fill up every 3 days (330 miles) and its very consistant 11.5 gal summer 12.5 winter. They change the fuel blend when the cold weather hits and I can tell when they do. I have also been changing oil between 7500~8000 miles, so far so good!!!
