T-case question...

Will a t-case from a ZF5 bolt up to a 4x4 E4OD?

Would a '88 ZF5 truck have the BW1356?

I've been doing a lot of thinking and not sure if I want to do the ZF5 swap anymore. Think I'll stick with the auto and do the RSK and Dana 60 in the front.

Now I need to find a 4x4 E4OD tranny though...

While the subject is open, just a side question, is the 97 manual trans a ZF5? If so or not, can it be "built" stronger or is it spot on? ty

yes, the '97 manual is a ZF5. They used the ZF5 from '88-97. In '99 they switched to a ZF6.
I'm not sure what interal components you can upgrade on the ZF5, but a good clutch from Valair will hold up to a lot of power. The Kevlar/Ceramic single disc is rated at 400 or 450 hp (IIRC) and the ceramic/ceramic single disc is rated up to 550 or 600hp.

I'm really torn about my swap...

Swapping in a Dana 60 front is a given, gotta have 4x4.

Part of me is saying that sticking with a auto is much easier, less modification, but expensive for a good stout trans.
The other part of me knows that I would be much happier in the long run with the ZF5, even though it will take more work to swap it and get rid of teh auto stuff on the column...

What do you think my power is?, pretty stock, with the riffraff intake and a 3" downpipe. I don't plan on going with huge power so I'm guessing the 400 to 450 hp clutch is a notch or 2 above stock? I have no clue what my HP and torque numbers are bone stock, that and I'm at 6200 foot elevation. I heard the turbo makes up for power loss due to altitude.

Evan, the stuff on the column is a breeze. Just unbolting some stuff and putting it back together. And you don't even have to do that until you feel like it. Truck will run fine but be kinda silly looking to those who notice.

I did a zf5 swap in a truck of mine and much happier with the truck I think a e40d they seem to eat to much power and Judy shift like crap and not enough gear but that's me to each his own it costed me $1500 to do the swap and I'd do it all again

Stock numbers are around 215hp and 450 lb/ft I think. The Kevlar/Ceramic is 2 steps above stock if I remember right. Check out Valair's website and you'll be able to find the clutch that best suits your needs.

You're right about being able to do it whenever. I guess I could put a little black-out piece over the PRNDL part on the dash and either cut off or unbolt the shift lever from the column and cover it with a manual column piece. I just hope that putting in the clutch hydraulics isn't too much of a pain... and the wiring. I hate wiring.

Do you know if the slave/master are the same for an '88 and a '95?

I already have the ZF5 and t-case, so I'd need a SMF, clutch, slave/master cylinders, and pedals. So probably less than $1,000 for all the parts I need.

Definitely do the SMF!
DMFs suck, I'd like to kick the engineer in the gonees who thought it up.

I don't want to spend the money to build a good E4OD so I'd go manual everytime.
Now if I could just get my Wife to drive one.

The hardest part about the clutch and slave cylinder for me was getting the pedal box in that was probably the most frustrating part of the whole swap

Hey i am tossing around the idea of doing the swap in my 95 psd f250 excab lb 4x4. I have a 93 excab lb 4x4 donor truck at my disposal. I have read that it has the 42 ZF and the psd used the 47. Do you have any advice?

There should be a little black piece in your donor dash that you can put where your PRND21 are now which by the way comes out with the auto column and cables. Putting the hydraulics in is not a pain at all. There is a plate bolted to the firewall where your master cylinder will stick through. Pull that and there you go. Then run the rest down to the trans. I'm not sure if the 88 stuff will work or not. I did a quick check on O'Reillys website for 88 and 95 master cylinders. One of them were the same so I expect you can use it. Wouldn't take but a few minutes to put it on and try.
