E4OD shift delay?

This may have been discussed
If so. Please don't flame

My complaint: I have a 94 F-150 with a 302 2wd auto with 3.08 final
The truck seems way to anxious to get into 4th gear and sometimes 3rd. This may be perfectly normal and an attempt to save gas. But driving around town it's somewhat annoying. Sometimes I just push the OD override button to avoid this. But when I gently accelerate from a red-light it shifts 1-2 and 2-3 fine and at a reasonable rpm but jumps into 4th and it puts it below 1,000 rpm where I have no torque and it usually ends up downshifting anyway.

My question: is there any way within reasonable practicality to delay when the truck wants to shift?
