EQUUS 3320 MULTI METER

If anyone is familiar or uses one of these please help.

Bought one of these since I am working on a problem I already posted about. The problem is I have no idea on electrical. It doesn't say anything in the manual ( if you can call it that ) on how to test a car battery voltage ( Probably the simplest of tests ). And it is the first thing I need to determine.

Can I check the battery voltage with this meter?

If so, where should I put the dial on the meter? DCV?

Where does the black wire plug into the meter?
where does the red wire plug in?

My second test is the Coil. FOR VOLTAGE both sides. Same setting on meter as battery.

I'm trying to determine if the Mallory unilite ignition module is bad or if it is something else in the system. And the Mallory instruction say to test battery voltage and battery voltage to coil ( both sides ) before testing module.

So really in a nut shell what I need to know is where the dial on the multimeter needs to be and which holes the respective wires need to be plugged into.

I tried last night following the directions ( or so I thought ) but the read out was whacky jumped around when I tried to do the test for the coil.

I there an automotive electrical book for dummies I can get?

Black lead to center port, red to right side. DC volt position. Read battery voltage with black on neg batterypost, red on positive battery post. Read other voltages with black to ground or neg battery post and red to wherever you want to test. Manual should tell you everything, just read carefully.
Edit: A digital meter will tend to jump around a little more on readings than a analog one. Just what till it settles out.
