The starter silinoid sparks when I go to start the truck. The gentleman that owned it before I bought tried to replace it but he couldn't. It also drains the battery. Any suggestions? I think he wired back up wrong. It seems like an easy problem to fix but it has me stumped.
Why couldn't he replace it? How do you know it's what's draining the battery? Get a new one (~$12) with ALL the posts pointing the same direction and put everything but the starter wire (the heavy black one that goes straight to the back of starter) on one of the heavy posts. Put the starter wire on the other. Then put the small LB/R wire on the smaller "S" terminal.
I put the part that he got back on just for a whim and Bingo. I wired it up just like you said and it started cracking over without the key being turned over. I called the parts store that he gotthe part from and they said that would replace it with the right part at no addition charge to me.
What he did was got thr wrong solenoid. He got part number SS94Z instead of SS75Z.
BTW, I like vehicles with problems it gives me something to work on since I can't drive right now. (I waiting for my artificial legs to be made, hopefully they will be finished in April, just in time to drive to the fishing hole).
Have you ever heard of the "Jaipur foot"? It's made in a rural town (Jaipur) in India (I think) at a cost of ~$18 and it's the best prosthetic foot in the world because it's made for people who go barefoot. They can run, jump, & even climb trees with it, even when the whole leg has been replaced with 2 copper tubes. I saw it on Beyond 2000 several years ago.
Well I went to Advanced Auto Parts and they exchanged the part at no cost. I also took the battery back to Wal-Mart and they also exchanged it at no cost. (I also found out that he had a battery that was to small for the truck.)
When I got home I part the parts back on the truck and vola, it ran like an 18 yr. old top (lol). After I made sure it would stay running, I took it for a spin around the valley (about 5 miles) and it ran without even so much as a hick-up.
I just wonder when he realizes that he got rid of a perfectly good running truck for $300, (because he bought $40.00 worth of wrong parts), how much is going to kick himself in the a**.
Never sell to a friend that has more experience than you, and the resources of finding information out that you don't know, I guess.
