I'm having a couple problems with my Ranger that I figured you guys could help me out with. I've got a '98 XLT, ext. cab, 4X4 with the 4.0. When the truck is idling, it runs fine and it runs fine at highway speeds. The problem is when I go up a hill or something that makes the rpm's drop a little, the engine cuts out sporadically. Then the trans. will downshift and eveything is OK until I get to the next hill. I changed the plugs and wires about 6000 miles ago. Last night I tried to change the fuel filter but I couldn't figure out how to get the lines off of it. How do those darn things come off?
i just did the smae job two days ago. I got the tool at Advanced for $4.00. I still had a little problem getting it to fit on there. I had to file a little off the tip. Not hard to do at all. And I am by no means a mechanic.
Flatliner...I had the exact problem you are describing a few weeks ago. I changed my plugs, wires, fuel filter, and air filter. Now the problem is gone, AND I have gained about 2 miles per gallon. I am very pleased.
The fuel filter tool cost about 25 bucks at NAPA, but I got the metal one because I heard the plastic ones can break easy.
(I also had my transmission fluid flushed and refilled a few weeks ago to solve a slipping problem I had with the tranny).
Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm gonna drop mine by the local shop and let them put the filter on and see if they can find my other problems as well. I don't know if a computer diagnostic will do any good since the "check engine" light isn't on.
