The other day at work I was trying too remove a stud that was broken of in the head of a 3406 Cat engine. After drilling a ¼” hole in it heating the head and using an extractor tool to no success I removed it this way
I got a 3/8” nut and a stick welder out Using a piece of 6013 3/32” rod I set the welder on DC and started welding the hole in the stud up and finally welding the nut to the stud from inside. By the time I lifted my welding helmet I could spin the stud out with a pair of needle nose pliers. Total time to do this was about 15 minutes.
every rod salesman that we see at our shop has a rod just for that. normally i weld on the top of the stud with the mig, and get it good and hot, then i weld a peice of scrap or 3/8 square stock, onto the end of the stud, let it cool, and give it a couple shots of wd-40. when its cool use an adjustable on it ... i almost never use stick on a broken bolt. only when i'm out with our mobile unit.( only have a 300 amp hobart)
