Anyone use Gear Wrenches? Or had any problem with them? We bought a set for work a few years ago when they first came out and I really abuse them with no problems. I bought the set made by Coleman for home use and I rarely have to use my sockets any more, except maybe deep wells.
The only problems I've found is the cost, (which is going down), and sometimes it's hard to keep the closed end on a nut/bolt if I'm ratcheting really fast.
...Ive owned a set for about 2 years now, no problems as yet but then again Im only a part time wrench...
A directional arrow wouldve been a nice feature though....
About every 6 months a salesman from Danaher or Cooper tools comes in and hands out samples of their geared wrenches. I always make sure to get a size that I don't already have. The way they push these things I get the impression that they aren't selling very well. I have a set of 7 right now, 1/4"-5/8 as soon as I can get a 3/4" for free it will be complete.
I was using them yesterday, and they're Cresents not Coleman..oops. The ones at work are just called Gear Wrench. I think GW were the first ones out. I showed them to the Snap-on guy and 6 months later they were selling them, too.
I do wish they had more sizes. We use 1 1/16" and the larger sizes at work quite a bit. And a 13/16" would be nice.
I figured out the direction a long time ago. There is an arrow, kind of. Most of them are made in Taiwan and that's printed on one side. When I give them to a new guy to use, they always complain about the direction. I tell them to go, "Tie one on." If you can see Taiwan, it's always clockwise..
The un-written rule at work has been, if it's an imported tool and the job has to get done, use a big hammer on that wrench or what ever. The GW cost so darn much we baby-ed them at first, but now I'll hammer them just like a Harbor Freight and they still hold up.
I did notice that in the winter when it's raining for days and muddy, the ratchet mech. will tend to lock up. I take a little WD to them and dip the end in the hydrolic oil tank. Fixes them up for another year.
I love em' they save a lot of time and fit in to alot of spaces. Just a bit of advice dont use it to break loose frozen nuts and bolts, use the old Snap-On box end to break em loose and the gear wrench to run it off.
