Hey Fello Ford crazies
I'm looking to put a aftermarket intake & cam in my 390 for my and i ive been looking for a while and came to the conclusion to ask some pro ford folk. i also want to know what carberator to us too. THANKS!!!!
A 600-650 cfm carb would be just about right. More and you're feeding it more air than it can swallow. I'd suggest the edelbrock, but I'm sure some folks would rather use a holley. Personal preference rules all there I'm sure.
As for your cam, the crane 343901 is pretty good if you don't want to have to do too much to get the new cam in. I think you're fine if you just get the cam and new valve springs. There are more aggressive cams available, but the 901 is about as good as you get without going too far out of stock ranges. More lift, and you need new valve guides. Now, if you have it in mind to switch to mechanical, there's a (believe 343801?) crane mechanical that looks pretty sweet. Personally I'm throwing in an erson torque monster in mine (TQ0025 if I'm remember the p/n correctly).
It depends on how you want to use the truck. Why don't you post the specs:
RPM Usage
compression ratio
Headers vs stock exhaust...
towing, racing, off-road, ...
I went for high torque in the low/mid range and went with the Crower power beast 16903, it works in the 1300~3800 with a 5300+ redline. It delivers very agressive mid range torque.
As for intakes, I'd look hard at the Edelbrock Performer RPM, it's a 1500~6500 range and dual plane with very good quality. It runs about $285 last time I checked but is a good design. FE intakes aren't cheap, so I'd do some research and match it to the cam.
FE's benifet well from dual pattern cams, more lift/dur on the exhaust side.
I'm building my truck for driving on the highway to work, crawling in the mountains. So my rpms will be from idle to 6500 if that. and headers i was thinking about tri-ys fender headers for low end torke. cylinder compression i'm thinking 9 1/2.
Thanks sled_man4ever
I would suggest the Isky 351256262 cam. I ran it against all the cams that were suggested on this forum and for low rpm torque it wasn't beat. If you want I will send you a image of my desktop dyno run with it and you can make your decision from there. Just PM me with a e-mail addy if you are interested.
