Sticky Brakes

06 F350 4x4, 170Kms.

Hey Guys,

Have a question on the issues with sticky brakes. Drove the truck out to our campsite last night and when I get there rear brakes are smoken hot.
Couple hours later head home and they seemed to have freed up but where still starting to smell when I got home.

Question with the seizing brakes is it the piston in the caliper that seizes or is it the caliper stuck on the sliding pins? Gonna pull them off tonight and lube the pins hoping it isnt the piston & calipers.
Also what brake fuild is needed for the truck DOT 3 or DOT 4?

Thanks everyone

Actually had this happen to me 2 weeks ago - just one side. the caliper is a dual piston and only 1 piston on mine had frozen, Basically i had to get a new caliper and short flex brake line. i think the fluid is 3 but id double check your manual or on top of the fluid cap.

Sit down lol $130 plus $70 core charge from 2 way auto. hose was $50 but you may not need one. real easy to change and bleed. check your pads to - depends on how long this has been stuck but it may have worn your pads unevenly.

I have an 05 and am having a similar issue. The thing I am having trouble getting my head around is both rears are having the same problem. Do you think its the boht calipers or is it something up stream?? where the line comes together?

Most common problem is the slide pins being dirty and/or corroded. Next is a sticking piston. Just for your info, it's recommended to flush the brake fluid every three years. When I did mine the old fluid was black and it took four qts. of fluid to get the system clean.

Start with the farthest wheel from the master cylinder. Right rear then left rear then right front and last left front. Bleed each wheel until fluid is clear. Don't let the master cylinder get below half full at any time. If you introduce air into the system you will have to start all over.

If the caliper is sticking then go ahead and change the pads as they are or have been overheated which causes the pad compound to get hard

Well tore into it the other day. 1 set of pads was really glazed. Cleaned & lubed the sliders and bleed the whole sys.
Everything seems to be moving freely when I was under the truck bleeding the calipers. But I will need a new set of pads.

Gonna drive her a bit and see if it sticks again then change what is needed.
Thanks for all the info.
