No, it is not a recall. It is an expanded investigation for the purpose of determining if a recall is necessary. Leave it to the ignorant twits at MSNBC to call it a recall.
If the investigators at NHTSA want something more common to look into, they should investigate the problems of the screws falling out of the shifter mechanism and the brake lines rusting through on rust-belters.
my brake lines rusted through last fall. What an experience that was when trying to stop. Thankfully i was barely going 20mph and was able eto pull off to a side street.
Just had mine break last winter on my 97. Luckily I saw it while parked at a Mall and had some rope to tie up the tank on the side that broke. Since had both of them replaced.
How long should they last? The truck I had previous was 23 yrs old when I sold it and no tank issues on that one.
I don't know how anyone owns a car in the rust belt. My '92 GMQ came from IL and it had rusty brake lines, drivetrain and even the oil pan was starting to rust. It is very exciting when a line decides to blow. My '97 doesn't have any rust underneath but it has spent its whole life here. Also like to know why this would only go to '01 when '02-'04 heritage are the same. maybe not enough time to rust totally yet. Of course as dumb as the gvt. is they probably don't know any better than to look at those other years.

The quality of metal that is used today is not the same as 23 years ago. Why does it seem every 92-96 truck has issues with the suspension brackets rotting off and my none of my Bullies have an issue? Quality of metal, plain and simple.
I had brake lines rust and blow out the day I bought my truck, It was a little frustrating/embarrassing going to my girlfriend's(at the time) house to show off my new(used) truck and blow brake fluid all over her parents driveway. Then I was backing down my driveway a couple summers a go and heard a loud bang, took a quick look around and didn't find anything right away, the next day i was walking to my truck and saw the fuel tank laying on the rear axle, that was fun. I hate corrosion it is all over the truck now, i gave up trying to stop it. A Recall won't help me now.
In another thought i was at the ford dealer with my buddy who was looking at a new mustang but was afraid to drive it in the winter in Ohio and the salesman said with a straight face and i quote "All Ford Vehicles made since the mid 90's are made with a special laminated steel and won't rust." please! I told him I've got a 97 F150 rusting to pieces in my driveway, he had no comment.
Man that sucks I just replaced the straps and tank on mine 3 months ago and then I sold it. Maybe had a freebe. Oh well. My straps broke but I had the offroad package with the skid plate so it just dropped an inch down to sit on that. Drove it like that for a year until the tank finally started leaking

I was getting gas when I noticed the smell and someone said "you're leaking" that's when I noticed my tank was hanging almost to the ground.
I think the issue is 2 fold. I replaced my fuel pump about a year and a half ago, and those stupid little clip nuts they use just snapped in half, and were already in such bad shape that if the pump had not gone bad I would have had a tank on the ground in days. But yeah I have never seen a truck rust so bad on the frame in 10 years. The major problem is using the rubber undercoating instead of galvanizing. There should be a recall on that. My caddy is warranted for life against rust. So It can be done. Or maybe it's all aluminum
Living in AZ we don't get the problems alot of people do but I just inspected mine and they are a little rusted but nothing near critical. Mine is 01. They do salt roads around here in the winter but not to the extent colder states do.
Ok...does anyone know what part is rusting...is it the threaded part, the other end or the bolt clips that are failing. I just replaced my fuel pump on my 99 150 (230,000 miles) and did not notice anything, though I wasn't looking.....
As brake lines are a rather vital safety component, the logical solution is to mandate stainless steel lines and fittings. We used to tolerate trucks and cars with single-chamber master cylinders many years ago, but that was dumb and so are non-stainless brake lines.
