Indentify Bendix vs Garrison power assist ram

I think I've found a company to supply me a new cylinder for my power assist steering on my 67 F250 4x4 (thanks Yellow Truck!)
Here's my problem: I bought the entire works (pump, ram, brackets, etc) from a shady guy who I can't get hold of. So I can't find out what year it came out of.
How can I identify whether my ram is Bendix or Garrison?

Thanks!

You cannot find the exact year, because there isn't one.

Since the rams look the same (but are not the same), the real question should be: Is the P/S control valve Garrison or Bendix?

Garrison P/S: 1973 F250 4WD; 1974 F250 4WD before serial number T80,001.

Bendix P/S: 1974 F250 4WD from serial number T80,001, 1975/77 F250 4WD (Highboys).

1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog / Control Valves / Illustration Section 36, Page 13 (Garrison), Page 15 (Bendix).

FTE member Mikeo0o0o0 has this catalog on a CD, can scan and post pics.

Or, you could contact Green Sales Co. (greensalescompany.com -help line: 513-731-3304), ask them to fax you these two illustrations.

Trying to describe the difs in these two valves would be a pain if I had to type them, so you need to see the pics..

D3TZ-3A764-A .. Garrison P/S Ram Cylinder Seal Kit / Obsolete / 18 available NOS

D4TZ-3A764-A .. Bendix P/S Ram Cylinder Seal Kit / Obsolete / 6 available NOS

D3TZ-3C590-A .. Garrison and Bendix Ram Cylinder Rod End Bushing Kit / Available from Ford / Fits: 1973/76 F100/250 4WD (1977 is one year only).

NPD also sells rebuilt units of both types.....though the core charges can be extreme....

Thanks guys!
The NPD catalog has a pic of both, so assuming the pic is correct, I should be able to id mine.
I need the whole cylinder, because apparently my ram is pitted, so a seal kit won't help...

Like ND said, the Bendix and Garrison power cylinders look exactly the same (but are not the same), on the other hand, the Bendix and Garrison control valves look completely different, as seen here... http://www.stangerssite.com/TruckCVparts.html

Cool. Mine is a bendix control valve - so it follows the ram is bendix as well. Gonna call the company and order up one.

Thanks guys!

If your old one is too pitted, it may not be acceptable as a core by itself....you may want to comb the local junk yards for a second one to send in, just in case....I know I had to provide two for the first one I had rebuilt.....

Well I know the core is $400.00 @ NPD. When I bought one from them they didn't even look at it, I just put it in the box the rebuilt one came in and that was it. If you looking for one I have a couple of rams and control valves. PM me maybe we might be able to work something out.

Hey NumberDummy, I have a (belated) follow up question...

I also need the bushing kit for the end of the cylinder. NPD lists it as F-3C590-1, which of course cannot be the whole ford number.

I'm going to phone Green Sales to see about price for the cylinder and shipping, it would be nice to order the bushing kit at the same time.

Thanks for your help!

National Parts Depot or NPD. I think there going for $225.00 plus core which is around $400.00. If you have a core then don't worry about the $400.00, also they don't even look at the core so don't worry about the shaft as long as its together you shouldn't have a problem. Wrap it in a plastic bag and the will take the rebuilt one out of the box and put the core in the box. They get theres from Lare corp. They also get there control valves from them to but those are really hard to get because of the core is hard to find. I do have extra parts for that system like control valve, ram, steering gear box, draglink and so on. PM if you need anymore info, I'd be more than happy to help. Ooops the core on both are now $500.00 a piece. And the bushing kit they should also have, thats were I got mine and I think there somewhere around $30.00 for the bushing kit.

73 f-250 garrison power steering cylinder

I orderd a 73 f-250 garrison power steering cylinder from NPD and the part was too long so I will have to send part back. Just wondering if my old cylinder could be sent anywhere to be remanufactured.

Thanks
Sheldon

The Garrison power cylinder is about an inch longer than the Bendix power cylinder, so either they sent you the wrong one, or you have Bendix power assist and not Garrison.

Garrison was used '73-'74 up to serial #T80,001
Bendix was used '74-'77 up to serial #Y20,001

Maybe you have an earlier cab on a later chassis?

The Bendix/Garrison power cylinders look identical other than length, the control valves on the other hand are obviously different, which does yours look like in the link below?
