I've had my 2003 Heritage about 4 years now. Right after I would crank the key and the engine would start, along with all the idiot lights doing their usual flash ALL the gauges would also fully peg from left to right, then settle back down to their rightly location. A couple of months ago I noticed that the guages stopped doing this. It was suggested to replace the battery which I did. That had no bearing on the problem.
My truck did it too. and the battery would start the truck. I charged it. and after that the gauges quit pegging. Im not trying to tell you anything. I am telling you. and if you search "pegging gauges" you will find the same answer what I told you. I dont know the reason. but I suspect the electrics are very sensitive. and what used to work does not apply to todays vehicles. I suspect its not what you want to hear, but thats how it is.
A drop in voltage to the dash for any reason can cause the gauges to peg.
A brand new truck with a loose ground could do it.
Dirty battey cable connections.
Bad battery intercell connector.
To low a charge rate.
Leaky alternator diode stack.
Drain from another circuit etc.
Take your pick.
