Hi,
I am new to this panel, and I am glad I have found it.
I have a 1995 F-250 4x4 with an automatic and a 7.3 Powerstroke, I have been shucking the rear u-joints pretty often lately (every 6 mo. or so) It seems that sometime ago someone changed the rear diff. and the yoke may not be the same as my 1995 driveshaft.
The rear diff. I have now has written on it with grease pencil like from a salvage yard "89 SAP" 89 I am guessing is the year, but SAP I have no idea, May just be the guys initials.
So I am wondering if the diff. yokes are the same, or if the 95 yoke can fit the older diff. or if an older driveshaft from the carrier bearing back could be used?
Any and all ideas would be appreciated!
Thanks.
Phillip
I might be missing something here. But if the yoke was different, something wouldn't fit properly, right?
The u-joint end caps would be different, or the driveshaft would be to long or short.
Can't think of how else it could be different.
My thoughts would be to check pinion /driveshaft angles.
Its possible. There are different yokes long or short with either 1410 or 1330 u joints. I would think you could tell by looking at it. You using new cap kits on the R&R?
I guess I forgot to mention that the yoke was tore up when the driveshaft left. I guess what I need to know is if the diff. was replaced with an '89 model in the '95 if they have the same yokes or is this why I have short lived u joints.
So Iwill need to get a yoke, but I don't know how to id the diff. to get the right one.
Thanks,
Phillip
Have you had the drive shaft checked since it 'left' the truck? It's a given that the carrier bearing was damaged when this happened. If the yoke or drive shaft are even slightly bent the u-joints will wear faster than normal.
Yes, the yokes can be different:
There are long and short splined pinion gears.
92 and older Ford 10.25" = 1350 U/Joint size, short yoke.
93 and newer Ford 10.25" = 1330 U/Joint size, long yoke
Both are approximately 3 5/8 wide.
1350 series has a cap diameter of 1 3/16 inch
1330 series can have cap diameters of 1 1/16 or 1 1/8 inch or a combination of both sizes.
I pulled the yoke tyhis morning, it's 3.125" tall and has u-joint caps at 1 3/16, so it is an older rear end in my 1995 Power stroke. So I guess I will get a new yoke for the rear end and take my driveshaft to the shop and have it repaired and modified to fit the u-joint.
Thanks for all the help and info. now maybe I can start putting this truck back together soon!
Thanks,
Phillip
