Hey guys I have a 04' F350 xlt non dually I was wondering if anyone here has fooled with the acoustic blanket thing attached to the hood interior (if thats what it is). I was thumbing through the manual and it basically outlines the things to do to make your stroker louder by saying doing thus and thus is illegal and etc. It caught my eye as I am one of those people who like the sound my truck makes and want the world to hear it. Also the fender well guards that supposedly insulate the sound or dampen it, are they removable and if any one has done either of these things, is it noticeable if at all. I recently got a complete straight pipe installed connected with band clamps for easy swap when or if I need to change back to muffler/cat, and the whine/whistle of the turbo is beautiful. I love the cackle of the engine too so thats why i'm acquiring about it here. Thanks in advance and please spare me the redneck-isms as I am not that, but rather a individual who loves their truck and does not believe in having obstructions to impede its true sound.
It might interest you that after '04, Ford stopped putting the blanket on the bottom of the hood. If it made any difference in noise, it must not be much. Wheel well liners are to keep water and mud off of your engine. I would not remove those.
Go ahead and remove your front fender liners, too. Just post the pictures of those inside out dents from rocks and gravel slinging out of your tire tread at 70 MPH.
Replace all rubber exhaust hangers with steel.
Replace engine mounts with solid steel.
Cut 3 holes in your firewall so you can hear your engine's noise directly, just like God and Rudolph Diesel intended.
(What makes you think the rest of us want to hear your truck? Go blow out your own ears.)
Im not sure if I'd want all that road grime in my engine compartment by removing the wheel well liners. Im not sure you could make it any louder unless you cut the exhaust right at the downpipe and ran it out your hood bro.......but if you did that would be pretty badass!
I suggest removing firewall insulation which will increase engine noise inside the cab with minimal increase of noise outside where majorioty of folks have no interest in listening to your engine. It is your privilege to hear as much engine noise as you please as long as you don't subject others against thier will. I enjoy the sound of a Harley engine's rythim but certainly don't find it better as it gets louder. I believe those who make their bike as loud as possiable are doing it to impose on others same as fools with large amps and speakers booming when they could use headphones to rattle thier brain without bothering the intire neighborhood. Hopfuly you are pleased after removing the insulation from the dash and firewall.
I'm with da-bees. Removing firewall insulation will make the cab noisier, and there is a lot of fiberglass under there. You can have nice toasty toes too!
Remind me to never buy a used truck from this guy.
XB70, Dude this is one of only a couple posts I have seen you reply to, but every reply of yours that I have read comes off condescending, malicious and arrogant.
I don't know if your a twenty year old know it all kid or a wiley old grump just lookin to ruffle a few feathers, but you need to calm down man, being pissed off and jumping on people all the time is going to lead to a lonely life and an early demise.
Guys come on here looking for advice and guidance. No matter how menial or high on the technical scale the question may be, if your going to take the time to answer it at least be sporting about it.
He didn't ask you specifically for advice, therefore he didn't waste your time so don't make it so personal. Take it easy man!
FM20, there is a removable peice of black foam insulation inside your fender, if you open your door and look into the fender you should be able to see it. From what I have seen it usually doesn't stay in place very well and tends to bunch up and trap gravel and moisture which will make your fender start rotting from the inside out. It can be pulled out easily and may allow more sound to resonate from the engine compartment.

Thanks for the replys everyone. I was just trying to get an idea if anyone has done any of those things and what results they might have gathered. I was mainly interested in the hood attachment, the insulate looking materiel. As is appears no one really has "done this" I will leave everything alone in that case.

Early on, after Ford stopped installing the hood blanket, some guys here took the step of buying a blanket and installing it. That's why we know it doesn't make much difference WRT sound. But you might find someone local to you who would like to have it for their newer truck.
First of all, I want to applaud you for being able to enjoy the sound a diesel engine naturally makes and not being one of the stuck-up old farts who complained and complained and brought us to the ridiculously quiet and non-pleasing sound of the current 6.7 powerstroke. That being said, I would remove the insulation under the hood and if your really serious remove the carpet from the interior. A side exit exhaust right after the cab is probably the loudest exhaust setup, unless you have a single cab truck then a stack would be louder (from the driver's seat at least). To those who said 'no one else wants to hear your truck' I don't want to hear a Harley or a crotch rocket either but I deal with it and life goes on.

Thanks Ian, at my workplace diesels are all I hear and I've grown to love them. From a 345 Caterpillar Hoe to an off road yuke down to a F350 the sound never gets old. I often find myself flipping radio stations and unable to find a good song and then it hits me, all I have to do is turn the radio off and put the windows down
