OK so I tried to start my truck today, and it wouldn't start, so I thought the batteries were dead, got them all charged and it still wouldn't start, but I can hear the starter relay clicking when I turn the key, so I jumped the relay and the truck turned over.
so my question is......Is the starter relay bad, or is it the ignition switch under the dash?
And if it is the starter relay, what is causing them to keep going bad all the time!
Bad ground on the relay? When it does that check voltage at the relay with the ignition in the start position and make sure the ignition switch works. Try grounding the mount of the relay
sometimes its the solenoid on the starter itself being screwy, i had that same problem with mine, turns out the starter was also draining the batteries. pissed me off when i found that out. replaced two batteries that didnt need replacing, then jerked the starter from the 86 cause it was motorcraft. I would check the connections on the starter itself, sometimes corrosion gets to that too.
sometimes, sometimes not. like i said, i would have your Solenoid on the fender tested. If it works, keep it. If not, dont. The starter solenoid will screw with things. I learned that the hard way, greasy hands, a smashed to hell finger, and two truck batteries later...i figured it out.
Well I replaced the starter relay and the starter solenoid and now my truck starts.
I'm pretty sure it was the starter relay that went bad, but I think it was the starter solenoid that was causing the starter relay to keep going bad, cause when I took the starter solenoid off the bolt ends were really eaten up.
Anyways, thanks for your help guys, I put on some extra battery grounds I had, and with the new grounds and the new starter solenoid my truck turns over like a 5 dollar hooker.
