Hey I just happend to do that about 3 week ago they where shot they came apart as we lifted the engine, and diconnected the Chassy sorry the best way and safest way is to lift the engine. and with help of an engine host, and time about 2-3days.
The are 2 way you can do this 1 is pay someone, that the easy way.,or you could
do this yourself but in all there is no easy way if you do. you got lift the whole Engine
and Transmition.
You should be able to lift the tail shaft on the trans and change that one out, its removeable without actually lifting the trans much.
I'd just bolt that part to the trans, its 2 bolts, and let the bottom bolts, which are in slotted holes, sit there and let the trans pivot on that.
Then pick up the front of the motor to work on the other ones.
I need to do this also, so I feel your pain.
I do not have a hoist to pick up the motor.
Your gonna need some power, the motor is over 900lbs.
Could you jack up one side of the motor at a time using the exhaust manifolds like you can do when installing headstuds? Seems like it would work, but I think I'd want something else holding the engine up in case it slipped off the jack.
If you do have someone other than yourself do it double check that they tightened all the nuts properly. I had mine replaced when my tranny was rebuilt and they were not tightened correctly.
I just looked for write ups regarding changing the motor mounts and came up with nothing! I cant believe no one has done one, unless i just cant find it. Im about to change mine and would like to know tricks/tips as well.
Thought about putting a board under the pan and raise it up there, but i sure dont want to bend the pan that would be a nightmare, dont have a lift that would handle that much weigh, might have to remove the hood and use a overhead crane.
Jim
It all depends on what you have available to lift with. Porto power ,floor jack or a lift . You can do it with anyone of them . (I most likely wouldn't use the oil pan to lift it) between the motor & the trans there are places you can push up on.May be able to use 2 floor jacks from the rear with a 4x4 or a 6x6 bridging the jacks too ..
If I were going to do this , I would lift it with my hoist one side at a time while leaving the old trans mount for last . Unbolt the motor mounts , lift one side & block it most likely with 2x4's , then move the crane out of the way so you don't have to work around it. Like William said , the trans is mount is easy
One at a time with blocks is the safest way IMO..
