Ok, broke down and pulled my codes, the van seems to be "buzzing" and suffering from a few performance issues. The 311 code idicated A.I.R. system not working. What can I check to see what is going on?
could my PCV valve leaking cause this? It's a small leak and barely noticable, I found by moving the PCV valve and the hose that goes 'tween it and the intake is leaking a little bit.
No, that wouldn't affect the smog pump system, and the computer certainly couldn't detect it. Check the reservoir for the EGR & TAB/TAD valves for vacuum leaks, and test the TAB & TAD solenoid valves electrically.
I do know that when I went to pull the yellow plastic line off of the one valve in the air hose on the back of the motor it fell apart. SPliced it with a piece of hose off of our VW bus. Installed a new PCV valve, and the hose between it and the upper plenum, I need to get a new hose for the other half of the route (between the PCV valve and the valve cover.) I haven't had much time to work on it, I have to work today, so it will be monday before I can look at it again.
When you think you've fixed it, be sure to clear the codes - otherwise they'll stay in the computer forever. Just pull the jumper while they're flashing out.
Well, I got the vacuum line fixed, and replaced the PCV valve, only to find the the hose between the valve cover and the valve itself is bad, (came apart in about 3 pieces) I have no idea what this is called and cannot find it at any of the online parts stores, so it'll be off to napa tomorrow. I am also going to invest in a fuel pressure gauge.
Okay, fixed the PCV lines, thank God for Advance Auto. After clearing the codes several time I am still getting code 311. Right thermactor system not funtioning. HELP!
The only way the computer can tell (or think) the smog pump isn't working is if the TAB & TAD solenoid vacuum valves aren't working, or if the HEGO reports rich even when the pulse-width is narrowed to lean out the mix. I'm guessing it's an electrical problem with one of the solenoids. Haynes tells how to test them.
Well, I replaced my air filter, (it was almost clogged!) and that helped alot. No more heisitation. Need to reset the 'puter tho still idles a bit rough, but it has 137k miles so I guess thats to be expected.
