Rear diff pinion bearing question

Is there supposed to be play in the pinion bearing? When I remove my old pinion yoke, I can move the pinion shaft. When its installed, there is no movement. Does the pinion yoke support the bearing or is my bearing shot.

I'm installing a new pinion yoke as the old is worn out and for some reason it doesn't just slide in like the old one does. I don't want to hammer on it too hard yet. Maybe ill try seating it with the impact. All measurements mic'd out the almost the exact same between old and new.

There is a crush sleeve on the pinion that should be replaced evertime the yoke has to be taken off.

The correct procedure to installing, is after tightening the nut down enough to crush the sleeve, is to pull the axle shafts to check and see how much force it takes to rotate the ring and pinion. That spec is 16-29 lb-in. That way you get the correct pinion bearing preload. If you don't do that then it wont last long at all.

There is no torque spec for that nut, you just have to tighten it until you reach the correct spec. But I will tell you that if you do install a new crush sleeve, that when you go to tighten it, you better have a 3/4 breaker bar and cheater pipe.

The pinion will have slop in it if the yoke is not tightened up agaisnt it, since that is what keeps it pushed on the bearings so it can't move around.

good, thats what I wanted to hear about the slop. I figured the pinion yoke was part of the equation.

I talked to the tech at the place in TX i had my drive shaft made and asked how he usually does them. Said to just hit it on low with his impact, said not to crush the sleeve any further but just get it to the point it was before.

I turned my impact (IR 2135) all the way down.

The new pinion yoke does not want to seat all the way by hand. THe old one just slides right in. Should I seat it with the impact?

The champion flange to pinion connection should be tight. Looks like a normal slip on deal, but it's not. If your old one just "slid" off, you may need to do some more checking. What does the outer bearing look like? Any gauling on the bearings or race? I just rebuilt my entire rear end.

thanks casper. I know in times past I have removed pinion flanges and they have been tight to the point of hammering them off.

This one is worn and just slides off. What is the best way to seat the new one that does not just slide on and off. I dont wanna crush that sleeve
