6.4 issues??

I currently own an '06 6.0L 4x4 supercab. Due to the weight of my fifth wheel RV, I am needing to upgrade to a dually. What are the thoughts about owning an '08 f-450 with a 6.4L as compared to a new f-350 dually or f-450 with the new (relatively un-time-tested) 6.7L? The good thing is that the '08 has only 55K miles with 45K left on a factory warrantee.

What is the pin wt of the 5er? If I were you and was buying new I would look at the 6.7.

Used there are a number of the 6.4's out there. They don't get as good of mpgs though.

6.4 verus 6.7

I would go with the 6.7. But you should know that ford has not worked all the bugs out yet. Lots of people are having issuses with the the 2011 transmition, it's miss shifting. I love the mpg the new engine is getting and the engine seems very solid, but the transmistion seems to be a problem. Ford has been working on the issuse with multple updates but I don't THINK Ford has fixed it yet.

I have an '08 F-450 and tow a tri-axle fifth toy hauler that weighs about 16.5K and has a pin weight of over 4,000 lbs. The engine itself has given me zero issues, but has only 24K on it, and I did have to have the radiator replaced (under warranty). Fuel mileage in mixed terrain runs about 9-9.5 mpg which is nothing to crow about compared to the new 6.7, but it is about 1 mpg better than I got with my V-10 towing about half the weight.

I'm not especially up to speed on the specs of the new trucks, but from what I understand the frame in my truck is much heavier, and the rear axle is a massive Dana-110. The truck is beef all the way around and I don't regret my choice.

If you can get the truck for a good price, it's in good shape and something you'd be happy with, I'd pull the trigger and run down to your favorite Ford dealership and pull the trigger again for a factory extended warranty just to cover your butt. It'll run you another couple $K or so but if you buy the right truck at the right price to begin with you'll be money WAY ahead of buying the new one.

If you're gonna keep it more than 150K miles, don't bother with the 6.4L, it'll cost you a small fortune in repairs. Premature rocker arm wear and failures are popping up all over the place recently. Do a bit of reading int he 6.4L forum, and you'll see what I'm talking about.
It's not just an isolated incident either-since reading that post a couple of days ago-I've spoken with a few different people with those trucks that have had to changes the rocker arm shaft/assemblies,and their trucks have less than 150K miles on them.
