Hi all, I hope that I didn't buy an expensive problem. I bought a 1993 F-250 4x4 Diesel and it appeared to have no problems at all...passed dealer checks. I just drove it to Nashville, TN and back to Boone, NC pulling a 5x8 U-Haul on the return trip. There was no sign of a leak until I backed the truck up our driveway. When I stopped and turn off the truck, my son noticed something dripping under the truck. Fluid was coming out of the tube under the torque converter! It was not hot, but I suspect that the front seal is leaking. Any other ideas, and if so, what are they. Any idea on cost to R&R this tranny? I'm checking with the seller about warranty as he said that he had a new tranny installed recently....I hope so!
The E4OD has a problem with blowind fluid out of the front seal. I have been told by a trans. technician that you can pull a trailer all day just fine but when you go to back up a driveway, it blows oil out of the seal. From what I understand, reverse has a higher ratio than first, much closer to second gear. The added strain on the torque converter causes it to generate more heat as it multiplies and spins more. The fluid is then pushed out of the front seal by heat/pressure. There is an updated seal which can be put in, but I'm not sure if that is all that needs to be fixed.
I have a 4x4 too, and whenever I'm pulling a trailer for a while and go to back up on soft ground or up a driveway or something, I put it in 4 Low which takes a lot of the strain off of the converter. Hopefully this will help me to not blow out this seal.
I dont know any price figures really, but this is what I have learned to be the main problem.
