My brother pulled a brain-fart when he found his '05 Excursion had a dead battery - he hooked up the charger in reverse polarity and put it on "Start" - turned the key and heard some bad noises. Would that reverse polarity turn the starter backwards and destroy it? If so, how difficult is it to replace the starter?
Every piece of DC electronics that doesn't have a high-amperage diode to prevent reverse polarity damage may have been compromised. That includes the starter, computer, instrumentation, and every switchable device (radio, A/C blower motor, wipers, etc.) that was turned ON when the power was applied.
Check everything electrical very, very carefully....
Most good, newer, battery chargers have a built in protection to guard against reversing the polarity. It won't apply any voltage if the cables are backwards. Make sure that he was using on older (would have to be really old) charger that does not protect against this. If it is then I agree with the others and he has some big troubles....
It is a good charger, and not more than a few years old. I need to go over there and see for myself what the truck is doing when the key is turned - he says it sounds pretty bad but I've not checked for myself. Thanks for the advice (but now I'm really worried!) at least it wasn't my truck and my dumb*$$ that hooked the charger up backwards!

I can't believe that it would be the charger that caused the problem then. Maybe the battery is just dead.
