Leaf spring replacement questions

Morning all!

I have a 1993 Ranger Supercab with half a billion miles on it. I noticed the other day that the leaf spring rear shackles were rotten and were full of rust holes. I wanted to see about getting the rear leaf springs and shackles replaced as they have at least 180K miles on them.

Talking to a guy at work -- he said he's done them, and that you often need to drop the gas tank to do the shackles and springs. Is this true on these trucks? If so -- this sucker is going to the local garage to get done cause I don't have the time (working 80+ hours a week) to drop a gas tank and the associated issues with all that mess. (Been there done that!)

Thanks for any tips you have.

You don't have to drop the gas tank. I just replaced the rear hangers and shackles on my 98' ranger and it took me 3 hrs for Both sides. a good grinder or cut off wheel you will need to grind off the factory rivets

Is job done yet? If not the holes by the gas tank are easy to reinstall........just put a wire through the frame after grinding off rivets, and wrap the wire around threads on new bolts and pull through frame. Put washer and nuts on and tighten. I had a 93 and all the brackets rotted out!

Yeah i got the same truck and no you dont have to remove the gas tank,, BUT if it if its seen a lot of mud or salt from the road that bolt for the shackles very well could be seased up. I was goin to do a shackle lift on my truck but i couls not get them out to save my life and i tried everything so i had to do a block lift insted, But you may have better luck, Just put the rear end of the truck on jack stands to were the back wheels are off the ground then take a jack and put in under the Diff so you can jack the axle up just enuff to take the stress off the bolts

pull the bed off, 6 bolts, fuel filler neck-to-body 3 screws, disconnect wire harness at rear for taillights. 2 people can easily lift the box. i used a tractor with a front loader that had forklift forks. if your doing the rear hangers only its doable with the bed in place, but removed its alot easier. i used the torch to deal with the rivits on the rear hangers, air chiesel/punch for the front hangers. i also put new spring bushings in. probly took 2-3 hours for each set. i did the rear hangers first, about a year later i did the fronts. when i did the fronts i took out all the bed bolts but the back 2 (and they were loose most of the way) and tilted the bed, but i bumped the rusty fuel line coming off the fuel pump and it cracked, pulled the bed all the way off the next day and put a new fuel pump assy in, should have pulled the bed all the way off to begin with.
