Replacing Water Pump Questions

I am having a heck of a time getting the nut off the front of the water pump on my 93 explorer. I borrowed the wrenches from auto zone to do the job. The box the wrenched came in say Ford 5.9 L. Is there a different size for the 4.0 L? Has any one had success with the strap wrench and large pliers instead of the wrenches?

Hi there,
Does the wrench fit properly? It should be the same size as on a 5.8L.
Keep the belt on while you're trying to undo the nut.
I always hit the wrench with a big hammer to break the nut loose but Autozone migth frown on you beating on their tools

I did take the belt off first maybe that would make a difference. The nut wrench is slipping off and rounding the corners of the nut. I may get some large pliers to grasp it and see if that will help.

Thanks,

Sounds like the wrong size wrench then
I think on a 4L you might be able to just use a big wrench instead of the special one.....I think there is enough room.

My initial thinking was right. I bought an adjustable pair of 10inch pliers, left the belt off and used the larger of the specialty tools and the pliers and got the fan and clutch off in about 2 minutes. Thanks for your help. I should be able to clean the surfaces and get everything back together by tonight sometime. It has been over 20 years since I have attempted to replace a water pump. When I was a young farm boy(17 or 18) I did it on my chevy pickup and again a couple of years later on my trans am. There is not much different from then to now. You would think that there would have been some kind of advancement in that arena. The tough stuff is all the electronic components and fuel injection systems that have come along. I would not even want to attempt that with out some training on diagnostics.

Later

Good to hear that you got it done
Some race cars and a few street cars use electric water pumps. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw those on more production vehicles in the future.
As for the electronics and fuel injection etc after working on them a bit you adapt. But even with lots of training and manuals and tools there are still sometimes that they are almost impossible to fix
Sometimes at work when we can't figure out what to do to fix a vehicle we will phone Ford technical hotline and talk to an engineer for help. Quite often they have no idea what we need to do next. They tell us to follow what it says in the manual. We ask where in the manual. They put us on hold for long periods of time while they look and then they come back and tell us we are right...the manual doesn't say what to do. It appears that no one talks....the people that design the vehicle dont talk to the people that buils it and they dont talk to the people that make the manuals. It get's VERY frustrating sometimes.
hmmm how did I get onto that rant?

bluechiptrader,

I ran into your wrench problem several years ago. It was a brand-new set from Autozone or PartsAmerica. One of the wrenches was too big and rounding the nut. I went back to the store and convinced the parts guy to look around for another set. He came back with a beat-up old set, but they fit perfectly. Glad it worked out.
