When the air suspension goes, do you notice a rougher ride like regular shocks? I have a 2004 EB w/ factory air suspension. 87,000 miles. No sagging, diagnostic in the "Message Center" (FWIW) indicates no issues (have run the diagnostic when the compressor was running). Got a Strutmaster quote of $1400 to replace the system w/ their package. What other indicators are there that this needs replacement? The 87,000 miles is mostly highway driving on smooth Southern roads.

If its not sagging and the compressor is not running extra long/loud, then its doubtful that the bags are the problem.
If the bags completely fail, the ride is terrible and you will know that the bags are down and the axels are on the stops, but they usually fail gradually and the compressor runs more.
Now, the shocks inside the bags will eventually wear out too, and the ride will be like classic worn out shocks -- bouncy over bumps and uneven spots in the road. Aleast that's what mine was like at 164k miles. I would not exactly describe that as a "rough" ride.
But based on your description, I would not think your shocks are failing -- not a lot of rough miles.
cdherman is correc. you will know when your airbags aren't inflating or holding air anymore with the rear end practically on the ground. when the pumps starts to cycle more than usual, you probably have developed the typical slow leak which will occur after 7-10 yrs.
How difficult is to replace the compressor. Dealer has stated that compressor has a leak and the cost for the replacement is $850. The factory price is $190 and I was thinking to do it myself....
