f1 front fender: cover plate??

i see replacement fender cover plates to cover the hole under the upper edge of the front fender (48-50) f1. what was it for? i've never had one on mine, do i need it? it's a trapezoid (if i rem. my geometry) shaped about 6" long. after some finish body work, will be putting my truck back together. just wondering about that hole. thanks, dick r.

Are you talking about a hole above the right headlight? That's a hole for one of those ducts for the original heater. My 50 had the hole and the PO patched it. My 49 does not have it.

that's the one and it makes sense now. don't have magic air so i guess i could cover it to keep rain from entering under the fenders during a "driving" rain. thanks:

So somebody reproduces and sells a cover plate for that very purpose? Do you have a link for us to look at? Kind of surprises me that it exists.

my bad. on closer examination LMC and classic haulers sell a "fender cover plate GASKET set." guess it would be fairly easy to make a cover. sorry about the mislead on that one. LMC is on the left side (drivers) says for 51-52. haulers shows same gasket 51, 52 for right side in their pic. dick r.

My truck has the opening for the Magic-Air heater along with all of the duct work. My parts truck has a block-off panel that looks like a knock-out panel. It looks like it would be something that they broke out at the factory if the truck was slated to get the Magic-Air.

I think you could cut a piece of thin sheet metal and cover the opening by either gluing or riveting it in place.

As stated, it's for the fresh tube on the Magic Air heater. The cover is actualy screwed into the fender, if I remember correctly. It's not a knock-out plate. It's an actual cover that is stamped out of metal. You can make just a flat cover out of some sheetmetal if you're not concerned with originality.

I may have one or two of those covers. Stay tuned....

One thing is for sure, the block off cover is not nearly as hard to come by as the fresh air snorklel that it takes the place of.

Looks like all them heaters headed south for the winter! No wonder they are so hard to find! They all went for makeovers at Denny's place.

Here's a picture of the cover. As you can barely see, the cover is stamped. It's screwed in the front and bolted in the rear to the top of the fender/headlight (grille) wind deflector panel from inside the fender area.
