1990 F150 5.0 4x4 195k miles. I would like to go with what the manufacturer recommends. Synthetic or conventional or blend. What viscosity? I bought valvoline synthetic 10W-30 but its so expensive and I want to be using the right oil. My truck has no owners manual.
I always use Valvoline 10-40 although im sure it asks for 10-30. I do my 3000 mile oil changes and refuse to use anything but normal plain old oil. My truck doesnt burn any (although it does have a rear main leak) but it is cheaper than synthetic.
As sidewinder said Castrol GTX.. Ive used that when it was on sale cause I like their GTX anti sludge stuff. But I only stick between those 2 brands. Normally Valvoline though.
I agree with both Volvo and Sidewinder. Oil is a personal preference and everyone has thier own opinion and not everyone will agree with what another member uses.
When you change oil, I would use a clean drain pan. Let it sit for several hours. After letting it sit(i do for @ least 5,8 even 24 hours), gently drain into a container you can dispose of used oil properly. Look @ the original drain pain for any sludge, bearing material, or foreign debris. You can really get an idea of how the motor is doing by looking @ the deposits left.
