Also may want to check on if you Grandfather had a file on this truck... He may have changed the frame... Or may have had the Serial # written on the receipt from the powder coating shop. Sometimes they add where it was located... When I had my motorcycle frame powder coated... they asked me if I wanted to do something with the VIN... Mine didn't have a vin on the frame (since it is a '62)
I don't know about your state but in mine my dad passed several years ago. He had a old car he wanted me to have. We couldn't find a title. I went to a independent title business (not DMV), paid $63.00 and they filled out a state form for a gift from dad to me. They did a state title search to see if it was regestered or titled. It was not. I signed and sent it in. In two weeks I recieved a clear title. All I gave them was info about the car. Either get a title for the tag you have or tag for the title you have. Which ever closely matches the actual year of the truck.
Call the DMV and cancel. If they get pushy, reschedule for three-four weeks, then cancel again, with maybe a different person and you could have a tag/title made to match.
If it were mine, I'd run the VIN thru Idaho's DMV, to see if the VIN/title is clear. Let's hope it is, otherwise...
If the DMV investigator finds a cloudy VIN/title, guess what happens next?
Send me a PM and we should talk. I work with Idaho's lobbying organization (USRI) and have worked with the Idaho DMV for over 30 years. I know the inspectors and can help you out.

My sisters sent me everything that they could find related to the truck and it's not much unfortunately. I tried to get all the receipts just in case something like this happened but they had already trashed them.
