I am having issues with the original oil bath air cleaner for this '54 F-100. It is the correct air cleaner, and the carburetor is correct. I think something is missing, or something else is wrong, as I do not have another sample to look at, at this time. I cannot get the air cleaner base to fit tightly around the neck of the carb, and it has been numerous years since I dealt with the 239 in my fathers '55, which fits correctly. The air cleaner was off, on the cab floor when the truck arrived, and there was nothing on the neck of the carb. I can find nothing listed in the parts books, and nothing to indicate something is missing, but it doesn't seem to fit properly. I can get, and upload photos if neccessary, but is there anything, off the top of anyones heads, that you all can think of?
Is the neck of the air cleaner V-shaped? some a.c.'s and carbs have straight necks as yours does, and most trucks have a wedge shape to better support the weight of the a.c. (hard to describe, do a search as I posted picture of the two types)
Some oil baths have an adjustable clamp made as part of them that fits between the air cleaner and the throat of the carb. Has a handle that tightens it up.
What's that radio from? Looks like the deluxe type that was used in 1947/52 Studebakers.
I have the carb on the left, according to the post by Ross, and my air cleaner, and clamp are of the type pictured by Joe. Again, this air cleaner was just sitting on the floor, as in the picture I posted above, so I cannot guarantee it is the correct air cleaner, except that it looks like an original air cleaner.
I wonder, is it possible, since I do beleive the carb has been changed, is the incorrect carb on this truck? Should I have a carb that is like the one on the right, with the clamping ring, that loosely resembles an exhaust donut seal?
I don't see how the clamp would work on the carb on the left.
The clamp needs a lip to grab onto. I would guess you have the wrong carb for that air cleaner, but I'm far from an expert.
I believe that carbs from cars were smooth at the top like the one you have. Truck carbs had a ridge at the top as pictured Harrier's post. I would look for the correct carb and attachment clamp, if yours is missing.
I'm not sure if you have the wrong carb or the wrong cleaner, but either way, your parts don't match. I guess the good news is, you're not missing anything, necessarily. If you're not looking to be concours correct, you're in luck. All of the really cool aftermarket air filter units are designed to fit on your carb type. If that's the way you decide to go, your stock cleaner assembly may be the one I'm looking for for my project. We might be able to work something out there.
This truck is being restored stock, including an oil bath air cleaner. I suppose, I will have to drill some small holes, and install set screws to make it work. I understand what the problem is, but do not have a way to correct it at this time, unless some of you have the correct carb top you would be willing to part with.
"1952" or Vintage Speed can likely fix you up with the matching bowl cover, so you don't have to change the whole carb. Rebuilt carbs often came with the smooth (straight) style like you have, so did generic replacements.
I was wondering about that Ross. I know that I have two carbs with this engine. One is marked ECG, and is also a 1 1/16", while the other is marked EBU, and 1" Both have the same bowl cover, and I think that somewhere along the line, one got swapped, then another was picked up, and they both were wrong. That is the only thing that makes sense. I located another carb on ebay, and it's in Oregon, and has the top I need. For $20 somethin (currently) plus $10 shipping, I will get it, and change the top out.
I greatly appreciate the input, I was starting to wonder, since it's been more than ten years since the last time I laid eyes on a 239 with oil bath top. The last several dealings have been 279s, and 317s, and Caterpillars, and Cummins.

Yes, the old radio is a Studebaker/Philco. It's not going back in the truck. In fact, I think the owner will end up putting it on ebay, even though we have no clue if it works.
