i have had to replace both front bearings on all three of my f150 4x4's, the originals last approx 100k, the replacements ranged in price from 500 down to about $200.00 last bought at lordco. I never had to replace the second set but you should check the seal and consider replacing it as well if you want to go far. I am peeved at the design, the big diameter seal leaks too easily and the water then sets inside and works away at the bearing. I usually put a layer of grease on the inside to displace water and hopefully buy time. it seems to work, I have put another 250,000 km on replaced bearings.
I came across this on youtube it is on a F-550 but a F-150 should have a similar design, the guy greased the bearings from the abs sensor hole. YouTube - greasing the front hubs on a 550 ford
Mine is a 03' F150, 4X4 and when the front pass. bearing went it sounded like road noise from a tire. Ford told me that now with new Michalens that I could now hear the bearing. They put it on the lift engaged the front and wha la, front pass. bearing (ouch). I have since read that there are ball bearing (cheap), and roller bearing hubs (best) and because of the close tolerance involved with the anti lock brakes that replacing the bearing only is not an option since it will show a code on the system, sounds complicated to me... but I do know that there is a wire that connects to the hub.
Good Luck
I thought through 2003 (2004 Heritage) you could still change out wheel bearings in the front on both the 4x4 & 4x2. I know you can on the 4x2 because I have on my 97 (which is the same AFAIK as the 2003). Now on the 2004 and up, that's a whole different animal, that one you need to replace the whole hub on the the 4x2 at a minimum.
You could be partially correct, when I worked at Ford they would have what they called an engineering change, possibly mine was one of those and since I don't know when mine was born. I do know that the whole hub has to be changed...... at least on mine. 03',FX4, F150.
this is not the old style front end from the 1980s. All the F150s from 1997 on have sealed bearing hubs on the 4 x 4 version. Same design as the Explorer and front wheel drive cars like the Taurus. Different bearings/ hubs, but same design. They are all tapered roller design i believe. You have to torque the nut to a couple hundred foot pounds to seat the bearings against each other back to back.... The old design from the 1970-80s you adjusted the nut to have just a littel rolling resistance on the individual replacable bearings.
here is a good photo of the front and back of a bearing/hub unit.. the model number varies year to year depending on if you have 12 or 14 mmm studs, ABS or non ABS, and 5 or 6 or 7 studs..
the howl stopped for now (i know its not fixed) and i don't really know why it would have stopped? maybe it was crap caught in my backing plate?
i will keep a close eye (ear) on the situation.I should have some moola coming soon and when it arrives i will pony up and get some proper replacement parts.
