Hello everyone. First off let me start by saying hi and tell you a bit about my ride. I've got a 1994 F350 Crew Cab long bed. It's 4wd, automatic, and it's an XLT, with a 7.5L motor. Also has some 16" Gear wheels with Maxxis 315/75/R16 tires on it, I got off Craigslist for about $300.00. It has about 106k miles on it. It's been run through and it's pretty much my fixer upper and needs some love.

First thing that it needs is some transmission love. It's almost dead. This is the first priority before anything else can happen. It's tricky, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I took it to a company around the corner from my house and they said what I needed, but I can't remember now. Sometimes when I drive, it will slip out of gear and I have a helluva time getting it back in gear. Especially with a load. Basically they said it was gonna have to be completely rebuilt. They also said it was gonna cost about $2400.00. Well I don't have that kinda money in my pocket. I'm on a pretty tight budget so I'm thinking I'm gonna just rebuild it myself.

I'd like some thoughts or suggestions as to where I could get parts and stuff for a pretty decent price. That would help tremendously. I'm planning to pull the tranny and after that I'll start figuring out where to go from there. I'd rather just buy a rebuilt one if I can, but again budget is an issue, and besides that if I go to a "U-Pull it" place or a salvage yard I don't know how to tell if the tranny is good when I get it.

I'm by no means a mechanic, however, I am mechanically inclined. I can pretty much put back together anything I take apart. I'm especially good with instructions and pictures too. I'm sure most people are. So anything along those lines are greatly appreciated, and in the meantime I'll be searching google for some help as well.

Hope to get to know a lot of people on here, and thanks for any help as I get started on this adventure. At some point I'll start a build thread because I have lots of plans for this truck for family, work and most of all play.

Welcome to FTE. I know auto tranny rebuilds are not super simple, but there will be more people on this thread soon who can point you in the right way. First thing would be to ID your transmission. more than likely you have an E4OD, as most heavier trucks had that. I did run into a 94 last fall that had a C6 though, so it's not out of the question.

Also, the E4OD had a few week points which got addressed over the years, you will want to make sure to upgrade the internals when you rebuild so your transmission wont overheat or blow a seal.

to ID your tranny, check out these resources

1. Ford Transmission Spotter's Guide - Extrememly Comprehensive guide to identifying ford transmissions.

2. Check your door tag. on the bottom it will have a transmission code. Yours should be one of the following

G = Ford C4 auto
K = Ford C6 auto
M = Mazda M5OD-R2
P = BW T-19 (early), or Ford C6 auto
T = Ford AOD auto
U = Ford 4R70W auto
W = Ford C5 auto, or ZF S5-42 HD Wide-ratio
Z = ZF S5-42
6 = ZF M6HD-6
7 = Ford E4OD/4R100 auto (Lightning)
9 = Ford E4OD/4R100 auto (diesel)

Sounds like a decent deal! Parts alone are worth more than what you paid for it! (I paid $1000 for my 93 F350 CC) As for the tranny, its pretty straightforward to rebuild. I will throw this out at you though. IF the TPS switch is acting up, it will cause the E4OD to act up. It wont up shift, and all you will have is 1st and 2nd by shifting manually (ask me how I know, LOL). IF it does need a rebuild, you are going to be spending some cash regardless. Doing the upgrades are what really costs money. I lucked out on the E4OD in my 90. Picked up a FoMoCo reman unit with 50k miles on it for $500, swapped the fluid and still going strong 5 years later. Depending on where you are at, I would probably look at a used one. I did a quick look on car-part.com and found several 7.5 4x4 E4OD's, 1995 & 1996 models (all the upgrades already done) for $500-600.
If you are close, this one would not be a bad deal.

Wow, thanks for the quick responses guys! I'll get some pics taken soon and post em up. I'll take a look at the tranny and see what I can find. I'll take some pics of it too. The guys at the tranny shop said something between the 3rd and 4th gear was about shot? I'm horrible with terminology so please forgive me. Can't remember what they said, but it was something along those lines. Maybe that would help id my problem.

As far as upgrading, as long as I'm in there I'm all in for new parts. I like to do that anyway. If I tear something apart, I like to go back with new parts whenever possible.

heyuh...wheres the E4OD? hahaha...the E4OD is a 20 bolt pan btw. so count yer bolts

 

I just went and counted and it does have 20 bolts on the pan. So does that make it an "E4OD"?
