Lean Code bank 1

I got a CEL on my 96 4L EXT,130,000 mi. The guy that read it said it was lean mixture on bank 1. He also said a good start would be to pull the MAF and clean it and pull the EGR and clean and check it. I did that. While I was at it, I pulled the spark plugs, the IAC solenoid, purge solenoid. Going to also change the plug wires. Changed the O2 sensors 200 miles back.
I can't remember the code number. The items i have pulled and looked at seem to look OK. No plugging, if i conect a 12v source to the solenoids they react, if i pull vacuum on the EGR , the valve seat opens and closes. (Doesn't seal tight, but I wouldn't expect it to)

Question -----I pulled the DPF module mounted above but connected just below the EGR inlet pipe. How does this thing work? Is there a way to determine if it is faulty or not? It has two hoses in and a 3 prong connector on it.

FWIW---The best way I found to get the plug wires off was to push/pry "backwards" from the base of the boot, rather than pull for days until it comes off! Still a beast but a little faster I found.

Thanks in advance,
Stavid

most common cause of lean fuel/air mix on the Aero, especially the 4L, is the multitude of feet of vacuum line. don't forget the vac. lines on the gas fume cannister and the purge valve under the air cleaner box. i've replaced some of mine twice due to heat damage from towing heavy, get silicone hose only if you can find it.

DPPR module will throw a code specific to it, they seldom fail.

use lots of silicone high voltage spark plug grease on the insides of the boots. they get extremely hot and heat seal to the plugs.

Now that you mention it , while I was in the passenger side wheel well changing plugs, I could detect a very faint odor of what I thought was gas fumes. Maybe the cannister hoses are have a leak. Is there a way to check? They look to be tucked under the A/C accumulator and hard to access.
Thanks.

pull air cleaner box.

examine closely the vac. hoses for any decomposition, cracks or breaks, especially on the ends. pull the hose ends off the connectors if you can. they will probably break.
one long hose from purge valve up to throttle body across top of engine, lots of heat and engine fumes. destroys the hoses

Ford never put hoses on these to last the decades that we are getting out of a great van.

another common reason for lean A/F mix codes and run problems on the 4L OHV is a leaking intake manifold. fixed mine several years ago, also had coolant leak into the motor oil.
tall heavy floppy intake manifold plenum on an inherently imbalanced 60d V6 design, very small and few bolts, very poor gasket design.

search forum for both vac. leaks and intake manifold 4L.
