I was contacted today by a local guy that has a 1953 F600 dump that runs and is fairly complete. It has the original flathead 8 in it and according to the owner 39,000 original miles (They owned it since 1961). He is looking to scrap the truck (doesn't seem to need it) but knew I liked old Ford trucks and is giving me first dibs. I simply don't have the time to restore yet another truck, but hate to see it scrapped. Do the F600's have any big restoration value or interest? Is it worth getting just to part it out? Is it worth messing with solely for the Flathead? Any thoughts are appreciated.
I'm not a big truck guy... but depending on the shape of it I would say it's worth something, many of us would love to have a flathead V8, but moneys tight and I just finished rebuilding my 350 sb.
Big trucks require a lot of things that F-1's don't, in the way of parking space, shop space, tools, etc. Ask him for the engine if it is running well, and let the rest pass, IMO.
I'd say a lot depends on what the guy wants for it. It certainly has value as a parts truck, if you have the room and time to dismantle it. You won't get rich selling the pieces, but you would be helping out several of your fellow hobbyists while putting a couple dollars into your project fund. I find the most rewarding part is getting to know some of the guys here and helping with their projects. There's probably 15 or 20 folks that has pieces of my F-6's now keeping their trucks alive. Kinda like an organ donor program. ;-) If you can get it cheap enough, I say go for it.
The engine has universal appeal-it can be used in both cars (rods) and trucks. The rear axle is of interest only to big truck fans-it may be a two speed-but it's a big heavy beast with big heavy wheels and hubs; probably a candidate for the scrap yard. If it's not a two speed, there is likely a 5 speed transmission in it. Many of these were O.D. in top gear. Definitely a keeper if it is. If it's a 5th direct, not too interesting. The cab is the same as the F-100 and not as likely to be rusted out at base of the A pillars. These are always in demand The hood and grille are also same as F-100. Fenders are different (large wheel arch). Frame and front end are, again, only of interest to someone who wants a big truck.
I am heading down there on Thursday to check the truck out. I told him it all depends on the engine and drive train condition. "According to him" the truck is fairly rust free and the pics he sent via text message seem pretty good. As I have learned via ebay pictures can be deceiving. I have 10 acres of raw land to store it so that's not an issue. I just want to make sure that IF I buy it something can be done with it. I will update this thread after the survey.
