Ok guys, I'm treading in new waters here so ya'll are gonna have to help me. Found this Stroke on Craigslist...and I called him. He is saying that the tranny slips, or misses a gear or something along those when your driving around town, but its a new transmission. I have wanted a Stroke for some time...I am from the Pre-stroke side of the Ford Diesel so I want to know what you guys think the problem could be, and is it an easy fix? 1999 F-250 powerstroke 4x4
Tell me what you guys think, I do want to get myself into a Powerstroke, and I dont mind a little bit of work getting there so tell me what you think.
So I got him down to 4500. I know if i flashed 4250 in his face he would probably take it. Thats just my thoughts, im a serviceman overseas in Iraq and I was looking around. My father can facilitate all the paying of bills after its settled. I just wanted your guy's wisdom first.
He is saying it feels like it slips when it hits its shift point, then after a second or two it grabs the next gear and goes. There is paperwork saying its a new tranny already. Only 4 years old roughly. Could it be a computer issue? Gotta remember I am used to a 1984 6.9l Banks Turbo 4spd manual tranny XD!
Could be a number of things: Old filter and fluid, heavy pulling and it overheated a few times, low fluid, valve body is toast, tranny wasn't rebuilt properly (hey Frank!!!)... etc. Until you see it and drive it, it's so hard to tell. Can you make it to the seller and take a look at it then post back your observations? Take a look at the fluid level/color, notice if it slips after its warm or only cold.
Same truck without tranny issues could sell for $9000
New Ford HD tranny can be had for $3500ish IIRC (and assuming you do the swap yourself)
So if you bought it for $4500 and had to put in a new tranny, you'd still be $1000 ahead.
If everything else about the truck is good and you like the colors, interior, etc. then it could be a solid and inexpensive way to get you in to a Powerstroke.
