Well shame on me for not knowing that Hancook tires are made in China. My 2010 Focus came with Hancook tires and overall I've been very happy with them, they are at 10K miles right now.
Yesterday I was reading the sidewall looking for the tire manufacturer's optimum PSI and they it was right in my face. MADE IN CHINA.
And to think that I was considering a set of Hancooks for future replacement, not anymore.
You're going to have a hell of a time finding anything made in the USA anymore. Labor unions fixed that. China is fully involved in an industrial revolution right now. I have no doubt in my mind that china will later become the most profitable country in the world. Besides that, if you haven't noticed the quality of usa made products is suffering lately.
Yeah, I try to avoid chineese made tires. I'll accept japaneese tires though..... At least they have some automotive history to rely upon.....
I find it unsettling that a Ford came with chineese tires as OEM, in the USA. I could see this occuring overseas, but I figured the UAW would throw a major hissy-fit here.
I have a set of "american prospectors" AT's on mine that are made in the usa. Out here they are sold by Liberty Tire. I was told they were made by cooper but don't know for sure. Been a good tire so far on my 250. Had a set on my Ranger, lasted around 45k which was pretty good considering the roads /trails they've been on. I almost bought the hankooks for my 250 last year until I found out they were chinese/korean made.
The Yokohamas on my Expy were actually made in Virginia.
The thing that pisses me off is if I hadn't looked, I would have been willing to spec out another set when these wear out. They were good in the snow, they're wearing evenly and they are comfortable. Suddenly I don't trust them anymore. I hate to throw away a set of tires with only 10K on them but I might have to.
Here's an interesting link to American made tires. It looks like the tire industry is as international as the automobile assembly business.
I'm having the Yokos on my Expy balanced and rotated tomorrow, I'll pick the manager's brain then.
I really don't have an issue with buying a Michelan, Bridgestone, Yoko, etc. I do have a problem with supporting a particular economy. I will be careful so this doesn't get kicked, so, rant over.
If you really want an eye-opener, go to tirerack.com and start shopping for tires in various sizes. Click each different tire shown, and then check the "Specs" tab. One of the columns on that list, is country of origin. Some tires that are "USA brands" have some sizes made in numerous other countries. Some sizes will be US, and others can be mexico, japan, korea, china ECT......
"Continental Tire, a subsidiary of a German company, makes tires in five states: Michigan, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Illinois. General Tires are now made by Continental. Yokohama, another Japanese multinational, manufactures tires in Virginia." Which Tires Are Made in America? | eHow.com
The Hankooks on my F150 happened to be awesome tires. I traded it in with 42k and they still had some life left. Waaaaaaay better in the snow compared to the Contis on my SD too.
